The Young Man and His Party Approach

Who is that coming up from the wilderness
    like a column of smoke,
perfumed with myrrh and frankincense,
with all the fragrant powders of the merchant?(A)
Look, it is the litter of Solomon!
Around it are sixty mighty men
of the mighty men of Israel,
all equipped with swords
    and expert in war,
each with his sword at his thigh
    because of alarms by night.(B)
King Solomon made himself a palanquin
    from the wood of Lebanon.
10 He made its posts of silver,
    its back of gold, its seat of purple;
its interior was inlaid with stone.
    Daughters[a] of Jerusalem,(C)
11     come out and look[b]
    at King Solomon,
at the crown with which his mother crowned him
on the day of his wedding,
on the day of the gladness of his heart.

The Lover Arrives

What[a] is this coming up from the desert
    like columns of smoke,
perfumed with myrrh[b] and incense[c]
from all the fragrant powders of the merchant?
Look! It’s Solomon’s sedan chair,[d]
with 60 of the best soldiers in Israel[e] surrounding it.
All of them are wearing swords and are
    experienced in battle.
Each has his sword on his thigh,
ready for the terror of the night.[f]
King Solomon made the sedan chair for himself
    from the trees of Lebanon.
10 He made its posts of silver,
    its back of gold.
Its seat was purple,
and its interior was lovingly inlaid
by the young women of Jerusalem.
11 Come out, young women of Zion,
and see King Solomon with the crown
with which his mother crowned him
    on his wedding day—
        his day of great delight.[g]
