Romans 3:9-20

No One Is Righteous

⁹What then? Are we Jews^[a] any better off?^[b] No, not at all. For we have already charged that all, both ^(A)Jews and ^(B)Greeks, are ^(C)under sin, ¹⁰as it is written:

^(D)“None is righteous, no, not one;
¹¹    no one understands;
    no one seeks for God.
¹²All have turned aside; together they have become worthless;
    no one does good,
    not even one.”
¹³^(E)“Their throat is ^(F)an open grave;
    they use their tongues to deceive.”
^(G)“The venom of asps is under their lips.”
¹⁴    ^(H)“Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.”
¹⁵^(I)“Their feet are swift to shed blood;
¹⁶    in their paths are ruin and misery,
¹⁷and ^(J)the way of peace they have not known.”
¹⁸    ^(K)“There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

¹⁹Now we know that whatever ^(L)the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, ^(M)so that every mouth may be stopped, and ^(N)the whole world may be held accountable to God. ²⁰For ^(O)by works of the law no human being^[c] will be justified in his sight, since ^(P)through the law comes knowledge of sin.

Slaves to Righteousness

¹⁵What then? ^(A)Are we to sin ^(B)because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! ¹⁶Do you not know that if you present yourselves ^(C)to anyone as obedient slaves,^[a] you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? ¹⁷But ^(D)thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the ^(E)standard of teaching to which you were committed, ¹⁸and, ^(F)having been set free from sin, ^(G)have become slaves of righteousness. ¹⁹^(H)I am speaking in human terms, because of your natural limitations. For ^(I)just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members ^(J)as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification.

²⁰^(K)For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. ²¹^(L)But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things ^(M)of which you are now ashamed? ^(N)For the end of those things is death. ²²But now that you ^(O)have been set free from sin and ^(P)have become slaves of God, ^(Q)the fruit you get leads to sanctification and ^(R)its end, eternal life. ²³^(S)For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
