⁹ because, if ^(A)you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and ^(B)believe in your heart ^(C)that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. ¹⁰ For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.

Death in Adam, Life in Christ

¹² Therefore, just as ^(A)sin came into the world through one man, and ^(B)death through sin, and ^(C)so death spread to all men^[a] because ^(D)all sinned— ¹³ for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but ^(E)sin is not counted where there is no law. ¹⁴ Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not ^(F)like the transgression of Adam, ^(G)who was a type of ^(H)the one who was to come.

¹⁵ But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man's trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for ^(I)many.

³⁴ Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(A)everyone who practices sin is a slave^[a] to sin.

³ Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is ^(A)born ^(B)again^[a] he cannot ^(C)see the kingdom of God.” ⁴ Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?” ⁵ Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born ^(D)of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. ^6 (E)That which is born of the flesh is ^(F)flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.^{[b] 7 (G)}Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You^[c] must be born ^(H)again.’ ^8 (I)The wind^[d] blows ^(J)where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

⁹ Nicodemus said to him, ^(K)“How can these things be?” ¹⁰ Jesus answered him, “Are you the teacher of Israel ^(L)and yet you do not understand these things? ¹¹ Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(M)we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen, but ^(N)you^[e] do not receive our testimony. ¹² If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things? ^13 (O)No one has ^(P)ascended into heaven except ^(Q)he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man.^{[f] 14} And ^(R)as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man ^(S)be lifted up, ¹⁵ that whoever believes ^(T)in him ^(U)may have eternal life.^[g]

For God So Loved the World

¹⁶ “For ^(V)God so loved ^(W)the world,^{[h] (X)}that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not ^(Y)perish but have eternal life. ¹⁷ For ^(Z)God did not send his Son into the world ^(AA)to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. ^18 (AB)Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not ^(AC)believed in the name of the only Son of God. ^19 (AD)And this is the judgment: ^(AE)the light has come into the world, and ^(AF)people loved the darkness rather than the light because ^(AG)their works were evil. ^20 (AH)For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, ^(AI)lest his works should be exposed. ²¹ But whoever ^(AJ)does what is true ^(AK)comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”

^11 (A)“I baptize you with water ^(B)for repentance, but ^(C)he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you ^(D)with the Holy Spirit and ^(E)fire.

Dead to Sin, Alive to God

6 What shall we say then? ^(A)Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? ² By no means! How can ^(B)we who died to sin still live in it? ³ Do you not know that all of us ^(C)who have been baptized ^(D)into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? ⁴ We were ^(E)buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as ^(F)Christ was raised from the dead by ^(G)the glory of the Father, we too might walk in ^(H)newness of life.

⁵ For ^(I)if we have been united with him in ^(J)a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. ⁶ We know that ^(K)our old self^{[a] (L)}was crucified with him in order that ^(M)the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. ⁷ For ^(N)one who has died ^(O)has been set free^[b] from sin. ⁸ Now ^(P)if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. ⁹ We know that ^(Q)Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; ^(R)death no longer has dominion over him. ¹⁰ For the death he died he died to sin, ^(S)once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. ¹¹ So you also must consider yourselves ^(T)dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

¹⁹ For through the law I ^(A)died to the law, so that I might ^(B)live to God. ²⁰ I have been ^(C)crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives ^(D)in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, ^(E)who loved me and ^(F)gave himself for me.

The Way of Love

13 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.
