13 Where can I get meat for all these people?(A) They keep wailing to me, ‘Give us meat to eat!’ 14 I cannot carry all these people by myself; the burden is too heavy for me.(B) 15 If this is how you are going to treat me, please go ahead and kill me(C)—if I have found favor in your eyes—and do not let me face my own ruin.”

16 The Lord said to Moses: “Bring me seventy of Israel’s elders(D) who are known to you as leaders and officials among the people.(E) Have them come to the tent of meeting,(F) that they may stand there with you. 17 I will come down and speak with you(G) there, and I will take some of the power of the Spirit that is on you and put it on them.(H) They will share the burden of the people with you so that you will not have to carry it alone.(I)

18 “Tell the people: ‘Consecrate yourselves(J) in preparation for tomorrow, when you will eat meat. The Lord heard you when you wailed,(K) “If only we had meat to eat! We were better off in Egypt!”(L) Now the Lord will give you meat,(M) and you will eat it. 19 You will not eat it for just one day, or two days, or five, ten or twenty days, 20 but for a whole month—until it comes out of your nostrils and you loathe it(N)—because you have rejected the Lord,(O) who is among you, and have wailed before him, saying, “Why did we ever leave Egypt?”’”(P)

21 But Moses said, “Here I am among six hundred thousand men(Q) on foot, and you say, ‘I will give them meat to eat for a whole month!’ 22 Would they have enough if flocks and herds were slaughtered for them? Would they have enough if all the fish in the sea were caught for them?”(R)

23 The Lord answered Moses, “Is the Lord’s arm too short?(S) Now you will see whether or not what I say will come true for you.(T)

16 “After I had given the deed of purchase to Baruch(A) son of Neriah, I prayed to the Lord:

17 “Ah, Sovereign Lord,(B) you have made the heavens and the earth(C) by your great power and outstretched arm.(D) Nothing is too hard(E) for you. 18 You show love(F) to thousands but bring the punishment for the parents’ sins into the laps(G) of their children(H) after them. Great and mighty God,(I) whose name is the Lord Almighty,(J) 19 great are your purposes and mighty are your deeds.(K) Your eyes are open to the ways of all mankind;(L) you reward each person according to their conduct and as their deeds deserve.(M) 20 You performed signs and wonders(N) in Egypt(O) and have continued them to this day, in Israel and among all mankind, and have gained the renown(P) that is still yours. 21 You brought your people Israel out of Egypt with signs and wonders, by a mighty hand(Q) and an outstretched arm(R) and with great terror.(S) 22 You gave them this land you had sworn to give their ancestors, a land flowing with milk and honey.(T) 23 They came in and took possession(U) of it, but they did not obey you or follow your law;(V) they did not do what you commanded them to do. So you brought all this disaster(W) on them.

24 “See how the siege ramps(X) are built up to take the city. Because of the sword, famine and plague,(Y) the city will be given into the hands of the Babylonians who are attacking it. 26 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 27 “I am the Lord, the God of all mankind.(AD) Is anything too hard for me?(AE)

15 He said: “Listen, King Jehoshaphat and all who live in Judah and Jerusalem! This is what the Lord says to you: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged(A) because of this vast army. For the battle(B) is not yours, but God’s. 16 Tomorrow march down against them. They will be climbing up by the Pass of Ziz, and you will find them at the end of the gorge in the Desert of Jeruel. 17 You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions; stand firm and see(C) the deliverance the Lord will give you, Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. 18 Jehoshaphat bowed down(D) with his face to the ground, and all the people of Judah and Jerusalem fell down in worship before the Lord. 19 Then some Levites from the Kohathites and Korahites stood up and praised the Lord, the God of Israel, with a very loud voice.

20 Early in the morning they left for the Desert of Tekoa. As they set out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, “Listen to me, Judah and people of Jerusalem! Have faith(E) in the Lord your God and you will be upheld; have faith in his prophets and you will be successful.(F)
