²⁵ whom God set forth ^(A)as a ^[a]propitiation ^(B)by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over ^(C)the sins that were previously committed,

¹⁸ knowing that you were not redeemed with ^[a]corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, ¹⁹ but ^(A)with the precious blood of Christ, ^(B)as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. ^20 (C)He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was ^[b]manifest ^(D)in these last times for you

²³ for ^(A)all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, ²⁴ being justified ^[a]freely ^(B)by His grace ^(C)through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,

¹⁰ In this is love, ^(A)not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son ^(B)to be the propitiation for our sins.

² And ^(A)He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but ^(B)also for the whole world.

¹⁴ how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without ^[a]spot to God, ^(A)cleanse your conscience from ^(B)dead works ^(C)to serve the living God? ¹⁵ And for this reason ^(D)He is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, that ^(E)those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.

The Mediator’s Death Necessary

¹⁶ For where there is a testament, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. ¹⁷ For ^(F)a testament is in force after men are dead, since it has no power at all while the testator lives. ^18 (G)Therefore not even the first covenant was dedicated without blood. ¹⁹ For when Moses had spoken every ^[b]precept to all the people according to the law, ^(H)he took the blood of calves and goats, ^(I)with water, scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, ²⁰ saying, ^(J)“This is the ^(K)blood of the covenant which God has commanded you.” ²¹ Then likewise ^(L)he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry. ²² And according to the law almost all things are ^[c]purified with blood, and ^(M)without shedding of blood there is no ^[d]remission.

³⁰ Truly, ^(A)these times of ignorance God overlooked, but ^(B)now commands all men everywhere to repent,

⁴ For ^(A)it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins.

⁹ Much more then, having now been justified ^(A)by His blood, we shall be saved ^(B)from wrath through Him.
