¹⁴ Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ,^(A) and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.^[a](B)

²⁴ and to put on^(A) the new self,^(B) created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.^(C)

¹⁶ So I say, walk by the Spirit,^(A) and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.^{(B) 17} For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh.^(C) They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever^[a] you want.^(D)

²⁷ for all of you who were baptized into Christ^(A) have clothed yourselves with Christ.^(B)

²⁴ Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh^(A) with its passions and desires.^(B)

Living Godly Lives in a Pagan Society

¹¹ Dear friends,^(A) I urge you, as foreigners and exiles,^(B) to abstain from sinful desires,^(C) which wage war against your soul.^(D)

¹² Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it.^{(A) 13} For if you live according to the flesh, you will die;^(B) but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body,^(C) you will live.^(D)

¹⁰ and have put on the new self,^(A) which is being renewed^(B) in knowledge in the image of its Creator.^{(C) 11} Here there is no Gentile or Jew,^(D) circumcised or uncircumcised,^(E) barbarian, Scythian, slave or free,^(F) but Christ is all,^(G) and is in all.

¹² Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves^(H) with compassion, kindness, humility,^(I) gentleness and patience.^(J)

On Not Loving the World

¹⁵ Do not love the world or anything in the world.^(A) If anyone loves the world, love for the Father^[a] is not in them.^{(B) 16} For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh,^(C) the lust of the eyes,^(D) and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. ¹⁷ The world and its desires pass away,^(E) but whoever does the will of God^(F) lives forever.
