One hundred forty-four thousand sealed

After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth. They held back the earth’s four winds so that no wind would blow against the earth, the sea, or any tree. I saw another angel coming up from the east, holding the seal of the living God. He cried out with a loud voice to the four angels who had been given the power to damage the earth and sea. He said, “Don’t damage the earth, the sea, or the trees until we have put a seal on the foreheads of those who serve our God.”

Then I heard the number of those who were sealed: one hundred forty-four thousand, sealed from every tribe of the Israelites:

From the tribe of Judah, twelve thousand were sealed;

from the tribe of Reuben, twelve thousand;

from the tribe of Gad, twelve thousand;

from the tribe of Asher, twelve thousand;

from the tribe of Naphtali, twelve thousand;

from the tribe of Manasseh, twelve thousand;

from the tribe of Simeon, twelve thousand;

from the tribe of Levi, twelve thousand;

from the tribe of Issachar, twelve thousand;

from the tribe of Zebulun, twelve thousand;

from the tribe of Joseph, twelve thousand;

from the tribe of Benjamin, twelve thousand were sealed.

The great crowd and seventh seal

After this I looked, and there was a great crowd that no one could number. They were from every nation, tribe, people, and language. They were standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They wore white robes and held palm branches in their hands. 10 They cried out with a loud voice:

“Victory belongs to our God
        who sits on the throne,
            and to the Lamb.”

11 All the angels stood in a circle around the throne, and around the elders and the four living creatures. They fell facedown before the throne and worshipped God, 12 saying,

“Amen! Blessing and glory
        and wisdom and thanksgiving
        and honor and power and might
            be to our God forever and always. Amen.”

13 Then one of the elders said to me, “Who are these people wearing white robes, and where did they come from?”

14 I said to him, “Sir, you know.”

Then he said to me, “These people have come out of great hardship. They have washed their robes and made them white in the Lamb’s blood. 15 This is the reason they are before God’s throne. They worship him day and night in his temple, and the one seated on the throne will shelter them. 16 They won’t hunger or thirst anymore. No sun or scorching heat will beat down on them, 17 because the Lamb who is in the midst of the throne will shepherd them. He will lead them to the springs of life-giving water,[a] and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.” Then, when the Lamb opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour.

The first four trumpet plagues

Then I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them. Another angel came and stood at the altar, and he held a gold bowl for burning incense. He was given a large amount of incense, in order to offer it on behalf of the prayers of all the saints on the gold altar in front of the throne. The smoke of the incense offered for the prayers of the saints rose up before God from the angel’s hand. Then the angel took the incense container and filled it with fire from the altar. He threw it down to the earth, and there were thunder, voices, lightning, and an earthquake.

Then the seven angels who held the seven trumpets got ready to blow them. The first angel blew his trumpet, and hail and fire mixed with blood appeared, and was thrown down to the earth. A third of the earth was burned up. A third of the trees were burned up. All the green grass was burned up. Then the second angel blew his trumpet, and something like a huge mountain burning with fire was thrown down into the sea. A third of the sea became blood, a third of the creatures living in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed. 10 Then the third angel blew his trumpet, and a great star, burning like a torch, fell from heaven. It fell on a third of the rivers and springs of water. 11 The star’s name is Wormwood, and a third of the waters became wormwood, and many people died from the water, because it became so bitter. 12 Then the fourth angel blew his trumpet, and a third of the sun was struck, and a third of the moon, and a third of the stars so that a third of them became dark. The day lost a third of its light, and the night lost a third of its light too.

13 Then I looked and I heard an eagle flying high overhead. It said with a loud voice, “Horror, horror, oh! The horror for those who live on earth because of the blasts of the remaining trumpets that the three angels are about to blow!”

The fifth and sixth trumpet plagues

Then the fifth angel blew his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from heaven to earth, and he was given the key to the shaft of the abyss. He opened the shaft of the abyss; and smoke rose up from the shaft, like smoke from a huge furnace. The sun and air were darkened by the smoke from the shaft. Then locusts came forth from the smoke and onto the earth. They were given power like the power that scorpions have on the earth. They were told not to hurt the grass of the earth or any green plant or any tree. They could only hurt the people who didn’t have the seal of God on their foreheads. The locusts weren’t allowed to kill them, but only to make them suffer for five months—and the suffering they inflict is like that of a scorpion when it strikes a person. In those days people will seek death, but they won’t find it. They will want to die, but death will run away from them.

The locusts looked like horses ready for battle. On their heads were what seemed to be gold crowns. Their faces were like human faces, their hair was like women’s hair, and their teeth were like lions’ teeth. In front they had what seemed to be iron armor upon their chests, and the sound of their wings was like the sound of many chariots and horses racing into battle. 10 They also have tails with stingers, just like scorpions; and in their tails is their power to hurt people for five months. 11 Their king is an angel from the abyss, whose Hebrew name is Abaddon,[b] and whose Greek name is Apollyon.[c]

12 The first horror has passed. Look! Two horrors are still coming after this.

13 Then the sixth angel blew his trumpet, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the gold altar that is before God. 14 It said to the sixth angel, who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates.” 15 Then the four angels who had been made ready for that hour, day, month, and year were released to kill a third of humankind. 16 The number of cavalry troops was two hundred million. I heard their number. 17 And this is the way I saw the horses and their riders in the vision: they had breastplates that were fiery red, dark blue, and yellow as sulfur. The horses’ heads were like lions’ heads, and out of their mouths came fire, smoke, and sulfur. 18 By these three plagues a third of humankind was killed: by the fire, smoke, and sulfur coming out of their mouths. 19 The horses’ power is in their mouths and their tails, for their tails are like snakes with heads that inflict injuries.

20 The rest of humankind, who weren’t killed by these plagues, didn’t change their hearts and lives and turn from their handiwork. They didn’t stop worshipping demons and idols made of gold, silver, bronze, stone, and wood—idols that can’t see or hear or walk. 21 They didn’t turn away from their murders, their spells and drugs, their sexual immorality, or their stealing.

John receives the open scroll

10 Then I saw another powerful angel coming down from heaven. He was robed with a cloud, with a rainbow over his head. His face was like the sun, and his feet were like fiery pillars. He held an open scroll in his hand. He put his right foot on the sea and his left foot on the land. He called out with a loud voice like a lion roaring, and when he called out, the seven thunders raised their voices. When the seven thunders spoke, I was about to write, but I heard a voice from heaven say, “Seal up what the seven thunders have said, and don’t write it down.”

Then the angel I saw standing on the sea and on the land raised his right hand to heaven. He swore by the one who lives forever and always, who created heaven and what is in it, the earth and what is in it, and the sea and what is in it, and said, “The time is up. In the days when the seventh angel blows his trumpet, God’s mysterious purpose will be accomplished, fulfilling the good news he gave to his servants the prophets.”

Then the voice I heard from heaven spoke to me again and said, “Go, take the opened scroll from the hand of the angel who stands on the sea and on the land.” So I went to the angel and told him to give me the scroll. He said to me, “Take it and eat it. It will make you sick to your stomach, but sweet as honey in your mouth.” 10 So I took the scroll from the angel’s hand and ate it. And it was sweet as honey in my mouth, but when I swallowed it, it made my stomach churn. 11 I was told, “You must prophesy again about many peoples, nations, languages, and kings.”

Two witnesses

11 Then I was given a measuring rod, which was like a pole. And I was told, “Get up and measure God’s temple, the altar, and those who worship there. But don’t measure the court outside the temple. Leave that out, because it has been given to the nations, and they will trample the holy city underfoot for forty-two months.

“And I will allow my two witnesses to prophesy for one thousand two hundred sixty days, wearing mourning clothes. These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands that stand before the Lord of the earth. If anyone wants to hurt them, fire comes out of their mouth and burns up their enemies. So if anyone wants to hurt them, they have to be killed in this way. They have the power to close up the sky so that no rain will fall for as long as they prophesy. They also have power over the waters, to turn them into blood, and to strike the earth with any plague, as often as they wish.

“When they have finished their witnessing, the beast that comes up from the abyss will make war on them, gain victory over them, and kill them. Their dead bodies will lie on the street of the great city that is spiritually called Sodom and Egypt, where also their Lord was crucified. And for three and a half days, members of the peoples, tribes, languages, and nations will look at their dead bodies, but they won’t let their dead bodies be put in a tomb. 10 Those who live on earth will rejoice over them. They will celebrate and give each other gifts, because these two prophets had brought such pain to those who live on earth.

11 “But after three and a half days, the breath of life from God entered them, and they stood on their feet. Great fear came over those who saw them. 12 Then they heard a loud voice from heaven say to them, ‘Come up here.’ And they went up to heaven in a cloud, while their enemies watched them. 13 At that hour there was a great earthquake, and a tenth of the city fell. Seven thousand people were killed by the earthquake, and the rest were afraid and gave glory to the God of heaven.”

14 The second horror is over. The third horror is coming soon.

Seventh trumpet

15 Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven saying,

“The kingdom of the world has become
    the kingdom of our Lord and his Christ,
        and he will rule forever and always.”

16 Then the twenty-four elders, who were seated on their thrones before God, fell on their faces and worshipped God. 17 They said,

“We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty,
    who is and was,
        for you have taken your great power and enforced your rule.
18         The nations were enraged, but your wrath came.
The time came for the dead to be judged.
The time came to reward your servants, the prophets and saints,
            and those who fear your name, both small and great,
            and to destroy those who destroy the earth.”

19 Then God’s temple in heaven was opened, and the chest containing his covenant appeared in his temple. There were lightning, voices, thunder, an earthquake, and large hail.

144,000 Sealed

After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners(A) of the earth, holding back the four winds(B) of the earth to prevent(C) any wind from blowing on the land or on the sea or on any tree. Then I saw another angel coming up from the east, having the seal(D) of the living God.(E) He called out in a loud voice to the four angels who had been given power to harm the land and the sea:(F) “Do not harm(G) the land or the sea or the trees until we put a seal on the foreheads(H) of the servants of our God.” Then I heard the number(I) of those who were sealed: 144,000(J) from all the tribes of Israel.

From the tribe of Judah 12,000 were sealed,

from the tribe of Reuben 12,000,

from the tribe of Gad 12,000,

from the tribe of Asher 12,000,

from the tribe of Naphtali 12,000,

from the tribe of Manasseh 12,000,

from the tribe of Simeon 12,000,

from the tribe of Levi 12,000,

from the tribe of Issachar 12,000,

from the tribe of Zebulun 12,000,

from the tribe of Joseph 12,000,

from the tribe of Benjamin 12,000.

The Great Multitude in White Robes

After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language,(K) standing before the throne(L) and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes(M) and were holding palm branches in their hands. 10 And they cried out in a loud voice:

“Salvation belongs to our God,(N)
who sits on the throne,(O)
and to the Lamb.”

11 All the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders(P) and the four living creatures.(Q) They fell down on their faces(R) before the throne and worshiped God, 12 saying:

“Amen!
Praise and glory
and wisdom and thanks and honor
and power and strength
be to our God for ever and ever.
Amen!”(S)

13 Then one of the elders asked me, “These in white robes(T)—who are they, and where did they come from?”

14 I answered, “Sir, you know.”

And he said, “These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes(U) and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.(V) 15 Therefore,

“they are before the throne of God(W)
    and serve him(X) day and night in his temple;(Y)
and he who sits on the throne(Z)
    will shelter them with his presence.(AA)
16 ‘Never again will they hunger;
    never again will they thirst.(AB)
The sun will not beat down on them,’[a]
    nor any scorching heat.(AC)
17 For the Lamb at the center of the throne
    will be their shepherd;(AD)
‘he will lead them to springs of living water.’[b](AE)
    ‘And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.’[c](AF)

The Seventh Seal and the Golden Censer

When he opened the seventh seal,(AG) there was silence in heaven for about half an hour.

And I saw the seven angels(AH) who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them.(AI)

Another angel,(AJ) who had a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. He was given much incense to offer, with the prayers of all God’s people,(AK) on the golden altar(AL) in front of the throne. The smoke of the incense, together with the prayers of God’s people, went up before God(AM) from the angel’s hand. Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar,(AN) and hurled it on the earth; and there came peals of thunder,(AO) rumblings, flashes of lightning and an earthquake.(AP)

The Trumpets

Then the seven angels who had the seven trumpets(AQ) prepared to sound them.

The first angel(AR) sounded his trumpet, and there came hail and fire(AS) mixed with blood, and it was hurled down on the earth. A third(AT) of the earth was burned up, a third of the trees were burned up, and all the green grass was burned up.(AU)

The second angel sounded his trumpet, and something like a huge mountain,(AV) all ablaze, was thrown into the sea. A third(AW) of the sea turned into blood,(AX) a third(AY) of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.

10 The third angel sounded his trumpet, and a great star, blazing like a torch, fell from the sky(AZ) on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water(BA) 11 the name of the star is Wormwood.[d] A third(BB) of the waters turned bitter, and many people died from the waters that had become bitter.(BC)

12 The fourth angel sounded his trumpet, and a third of the sun was struck, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third(BD) of them turned dark.(BE) A third of the day was without light, and also a third of the night.(BF)

13 As I watched, I heard an eagle that was flying in midair(BG) call out in a loud voice: “Woe! Woe! Woe(BH) to the inhabitants of the earth,(BI) because of the trumpet blasts about to be sounded by the other three angels!”

The fifth angel sounded his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from the sky to the earth.(BJ) The star was given the key(BK) to the shaft of the Abyss.(BL) When he opened the Abyss, smoke rose from it like the smoke from a gigantic furnace.(BM) The sun and sky were darkened(BN) by the smoke from the Abyss.(BO) And out of the smoke locusts(BP) came down on the earth and were given power like that of scorpions(BQ) of the earth. They were told not to harm(BR) the grass of the earth or any plant or tree,(BS) but only those people who did not have the seal of God on their foreheads.(BT) They were not allowed to kill them but only to torture them for five months.(BU) And the agony they suffered was like that of the sting of a scorpion(BV) when it strikes. During those days people will seek death but will not find it; they will long to die, but death will elude them.(BW)

The locusts looked like horses prepared for battle.(BX) On their heads they wore something like crowns of gold, and their faces resembled human faces.(BY) Their hair was like women’s hair, and their teeth were like lions’ teeth.(BZ) They had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the sound of their wings was like the thundering of many horses and chariots rushing into battle.(CA) 10 They had tails with stingers, like scorpions, and in their tails they had power to torment people for five months.(CB) 11 They had as king over them the angel of the Abyss,(CC) whose name in Hebrew(CD) is Abaddon(CE) and in Greek is Apollyon (that is, Destroyer).

12 The first woe is past; two other woes are yet to come.(CF)

13 The sixth angel sounded his trumpet, and I heard a voice coming from the four horns(CG) of the golden altar that is before God.(CH) 14 It said to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels(CI) who are bound at the great river Euphrates.”(CJ) 15 And the four angels who had been kept ready for this very hour and day and month and year were released(CK) to kill a third(CL) of mankind.(CM) 16 The number of the mounted troops was twice ten thousand times ten thousand. I heard their number.(CN)

17 The horses and riders I saw in my vision looked like this: Their breastplates were fiery red, dark blue, and yellow as sulfur. The heads of the horses resembled the heads of lions, and out of their mouths(CO) came fire, smoke and sulfur.(CP) 18 A third(CQ) of mankind was killed(CR) by the three plagues of fire, smoke and sulfur(CS) that came out of their mouths. 19 The power of the horses was in their mouths and in their tails; for their tails were like snakes, having heads with which they inflict injury.

20 The rest of mankind who were not killed by these plagues still did not repent(CT) of the work of their hands;(CU) they did not stop worshiping demons,(CV) and idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone and wood—idols that cannot see or hear or walk.(CW) 21 Nor did they repent(CX) of their murders, their magic arts,(CY) their sexual immorality(CZ) or their thefts.

The Angel and the Little Scroll

10 Then I saw another mighty angel(DA) coming down from heaven.(DB) He was robed in a cloud, with a rainbow(DC) above his head; his face was like the sun,(DD) and his legs were like fiery pillars.(DE) He was holding a little scroll,(DF) which lay open in his hand. He planted his right foot on the sea and his left foot on the land,(DG) and he gave a loud shout like the roar of a lion.(DH) When he shouted, the voices of the seven thunders(DI) spoke. And when the seven thunders spoke, I was about to write;(DJ) but I heard a voice from heaven(DK) say, “Seal up what the seven thunders have said and do not write it down.”(DL)

Then the angel I had seen standing on the sea and on the land(DM) raised his right hand to heaven.(DN) And he swore(DO) by him who lives for ever and ever,(DP) who created the heavens and all that is in them, the earth and all that is in it, and the sea and all that is in it,(DQ) and said, “There will be no more delay!(DR) But in the days when the seventh angel is about to sound his trumpet,(DS) the mystery(DT) of God will be accomplished, just as he announced to his servants the prophets.”(DU)

Then the voice that I had heard from heaven(DV) spoke to me once more: “Go, take the scroll(DW) that lies open in the hand of the angel who is standing on the sea and on the land.”

So I went to the angel and asked him to give me the little scroll. He said to me, “Take it and eat it. It will turn your stomach sour, but ‘in your mouth it will be as sweet as honey.’[e](DX) 10 I took the little scroll from the angel’s hand and ate it. It tasted as sweet as honey in my mouth,(DY) but when I had eaten it, my stomach turned sour. 11 Then I was told, “You must prophesy(DZ) again about many peoples, nations, languages and kings.”(EA)

The Two Witnesses

11 I was given a reed like a measuring rod(EB) and was told, “Go and measure the temple of God and the altar, with its worshipers. But exclude the outer court;(EC) do not measure it, because it has been given to the Gentiles.(ED) They will trample on the holy city(EE) for 42 months.(EF) And I will appoint my two witnesses,(EG) and they will prophesy for 1,260 days,(EH) clothed in sackcloth.”(EI) They are “the two olive trees”(EJ) and the two lampstands, and “they stand before the Lord of the earth.”[f](EK) If anyone tries to harm them, fire comes from their mouths and devours their enemies.(EL) This is how anyone who wants to harm them must die.(EM) They have power to shut up the heavens(EN) so that it will not rain during the time they are prophesying;(EO) and they have power to turn the waters into blood(EP) and to strike the earth with every kind of plague as often as they want.

Now when they have finished their testimony, the beast(EQ) that comes up from the Abyss(ER) will attack them,(ES) and overpower and kill them. Their bodies will lie in the public square of the great city(ET)—which is figuratively called Sodom(EU) and Egypt—where also their Lord was crucified.(EV) For three and a half days some from every people, tribe, language and nation(EW) will gaze on their bodies and refuse them burial.(EX) 10 The inhabitants of the earth(EY) will gloat over them and will celebrate by sending each other gifts,(EZ) because these two prophets had tormented those who live on the earth.

11 But after the three and a half days(FA) the breath[g] of life from God entered them,(FB) and they stood on their feet, and terror struck those who saw them. 12 Then they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, “Come up here.”(FC) And they went up to heaven in a cloud,(FD) while their enemies looked on.

13 At that very hour there was a severe earthquake(FE) and a tenth of the city collapsed. Seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the survivors were terrified and gave glory(FF) to the God of heaven.(FG)

14 The second woe has passed; the third woe is coming soon.(FH)

The Seventh Trumpet

15 The seventh angel sounded his trumpet,(FI) and there were loud voices(FJ) in heaven, which said:

“The kingdom of the world has become
    the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah,(FK)
    and he will reign for ever and ever.”(FL)

16 And the twenty-four elders,(FM) who were seated on their thrones before God, fell on their faces(FN) and worshiped God, 17 saying:

“We give thanks(FO) to you, Lord God Almighty,(FP)
    the One who is and who was,(FQ)
because you have taken your great power
    and have begun to reign.(FR)
18 The nations were angry,(FS)
    and your wrath has come.
The time has come for judging the dead,(FT)
    and for rewarding your servants the prophets(FU)
and your people who revere your name,
    both great and small(FV)
and for destroying those who destroy the earth.”

19 Then God’s temple(FW) in heaven was opened, and within his temple was seen the ark of his covenant.(FX) And there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder,(FY) an earthquake and a severe hailstorm.(FZ)
