The Dead Church

“And to the [a]angel of the church in Sardis write,

‘These things says He who (A)has the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars: “I know your works, that you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead. Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die, for I have not found your works perfect before [b]God. (B)Remember therefore how you have received and heard; hold fast and (C)repent. (D)Therefore if you will not watch, I will come upon you (E)as a thief, and you will not know what hour I will come upon you. [c]You have (F)a few names [d]even in Sardis who have not (G)defiled their garments; and they shall walk with Me (H)in white, for they are worthy. He who overcomes (I)shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not (J)blot out his name from the (K)Book of Life; but (L)I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels.

(M)“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” ’

The Faithful Church

“And to the [e]angel of the church in Philadelphia write,

‘These things says (N)He who is holy, (O)He who is true, (P)“He who has the key of David, (Q)He who opens and no one shuts, and (R)shuts and no one opens”: (S)“I know your works. See, I have set before you (T)an open door, [f]and no one can shut it; for you have a little strength, have kept My word, and have not denied My name. Indeed I will make (U)those of the synagogue of Satan, who say they are Jews and are not, but lie—indeed (V)I will make them come and worship before your feet, and to know that I have loved you. 10 Because you have kept [g]My command to persevere, (W)I also will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon (X)the whole world, to test those who dwell (Y)on the earth. 11 [h]Behold, (Z)I am coming quickly! (AA)Hold fast what you have, that no one may take (AB)your crown. 12 He who overcomes, I will make him (AC)a pillar in the temple of My God, and he shall (AD)go out no more. (AE)I will write on him the name of My God and the name of the city of My God, the (AF)New Jerusalem, which (AG)comes down out of heaven from My God. (AH)And I will write on him My new name.

13 (AI)“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” ’

The Lukewarm Church

14 “And to the [i]angel of the church [j]of the Laodiceans write,

(AJ)‘These things says the Amen, (AK)the Faithful and True Witness, (AL)the Beginning of the creation of God: 15 (AM)“I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. 16 So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither [k]cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth. 17 Because you say, (AN)‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’—and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked— 18 I counsel you (AO)to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and (AP)white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see. 19 (AQ)As many as I love, I rebuke and (AR)chasten.[l] Therefore be [m]zealous and repent. 20 Behold, (AS)I stand at the door and knock. (AT)If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, (AU)I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me. 21 To him who overcomes (AV)I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.

22 (AW)“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” ’ ”

The Throne Room of Heaven(AX)

After these things I looked, and behold, a door standing (AY)open in heaven. And the first voice which I heard was like a (AZ)trumpet speaking with me, saying, “Come up here, and I will show you things which must take place after this.”

Immediately (BA)I was in the Spirit; and behold, (BB)a throne set in heaven, and One sat on the throne. [n]And He who sat there was (BC)like a jasper and a sardius stone in appearance; (BD)and there was a rainbow around the throne, in appearance like an emerald. (BE)Around the throne were twenty-four thrones, and on the thrones I saw twenty-four elders sitting, (BF)clothed in white [o]robes; and they had crowns of gold on their heads. And from the throne proceeded (BG)lightnings, [p]thunderings, and voices. (BH)Seven lamps of fire were burning before the throne, which are (BI)the[q] seven Spirits of God.

Before the throne there [r]was (BJ)a sea of glass, like crystal. (BK)And in the midst of the throne, and around the throne, were four living creatures full of eyes in front and in back. (BL)The first living creature was like a lion, the second living creature like a calf, the third living creature had a face like a man, and the fourth living creature was like a flying eagle. The four living creatures, each having (BM)six wings, were full of eyes around and within. And they do not rest day or night, saying:

(BN)“Holy,[s] holy, holy,
(BO)Lord God Almighty,
(BP)Who was and is and is to come!”

Whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to Him who sits on the throne, (BQ)who lives forever and ever, 10 (BR)the twenty-four elders fall down before Him who sits on the throne and worship Him who lives forever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying:

11 “You(BS) are worthy, [t]O Lord,
To receive glory and honor and power;
(BT)For You created all things,
And by (BU)Your will they [u]exist and were created.”

The Lamb Takes the Scroll

And I saw in the right hand of Him who sat on the throne (BV)a scroll written inside and on the back, (BW)sealed with seven seals. Then I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, (BX)“Who is worthy to open the scroll and to loose its seals?” And no one in heaven or on the earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll, or to look at it.

So I wept much, because no one was found worthy to open [v]and read the scroll, or to look at it. But one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep. Behold, (BY)the Lion of the tribe of (BZ)Judah, (CA)the Root of David, has (CB)prevailed to open the scroll (CC)and [w]to loose its seven seals.”

And I looked, [x]and behold, in the midst of the throne and of the four living creatures, and in the midst of the elders, stood (CD)a Lamb as though it had been slain, having seven horns and (CE)seven eyes, which are (CF)the seven Spirits of God sent out into all the earth. Then He came and took the scroll out of the right hand (CG)of Him who sat on the throne.

Worthy Is the Lamb

Now when He had taken the scroll, (CH)the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each having a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the (CI)prayers of the saints. And (CJ)they sang a new song, saying:

(CK)“You are worthy to take the scroll,
And to open its seals;
For You were slain,
And (CL)have redeemed us to God (CM)by Your blood
Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation,
10 And have made [y]us (CN)kings[z] and (CO)priests to our God;
And [aa]we shall reign on the earth.”

11 Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne, the living creatures, and the elders; and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands, 12 saying with a loud voice:

“Worthy is the Lamb who was slain
To receive power and riches and wisdom,
And strength and honor and glory and blessing!”

13 And (CP)every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, I heard saying:

(CQ)“Blessing and honor and glory and power
Be to Him (CR)who sits on the throne,
And to the Lamb, forever and [ab]ever!”

14 Then the four living creatures said, “Amen!” And the [ac]twenty-four elders fell down and worshiped [ad]Him who lives forever and ever.

First Seal: The Conqueror

Now (CS)I saw when the Lamb opened one of the [ae]seals; and I heard (CT)one of the four living creatures saying with a voice like thunder, “Come and see.” And I looked, and behold, (CU)a white horse. (CV)He who sat on it had a bow; (CW)and a crown was given to him, and he went out (CX)conquering and to conquer.

Second Seal: Conflict on Earth

When He opened the second seal, (CY)I heard the second living creature saying, “Come [af]and see.” (CZ)Another horse, fiery red, went out. And it was granted to the one who sat on it to (DA)take peace from the earth, and that people should kill one another; and there was given to him a great sword.

Third Seal: Scarcity on Earth

When He opened the third seal, (DB)I heard the third living creature say, “Come and see.” So I looked, and behold, (DC)a black horse, and he who sat on it had a pair of (DD)scales[ag] in his hand. And I heard a voice in the midst of the four living creatures saying, “A [ah]quart of wheat for a [ai]denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius; and (DE)do not harm the oil and the wine.”

Fourth Seal: Widespread Death on Earth

When He opened the fourth seal, (DF)I heard the voice of the fourth living creature saying, “Come and see.” (DG)So I looked, and behold, a pale horse. And the name of him who sat on it was Death, and Hades followed with him. And [aj]power was given to them over a fourth of the earth, (DH)to kill with sword, with hunger, with death, (DI)and by the beasts of the earth.

Fifth Seal: The Cry of the Martyrs

When He opened the fifth seal, I saw under (DJ)the altar (DK)the souls of those who had been slain (DL)for the word of God and for (DM)the testimony which they held. 10 And they cried with a loud voice, saying, (DN)“How long, O Lord, (DO)holy and true, (DP)until You judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?” 11 Then a (DQ)white robe was given to each of them; and it was said to them (DR)that they should rest a little while longer, until both the number of their fellow servants and their brethren, who would be killed as they were, was completed.

Sixth Seal: Cosmic Disturbances

12 I looked when He opened the sixth seal, (DS)and [ak]behold, there was a great earthquake; and (DT)the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the [al]moon became like blood. 13 (DU)And the stars of heaven fell to the earth, as a fig tree drops its late figs when it is shaken by a mighty wind. 14 (DV)Then the sky [am]receded as a scroll when it is rolled up, and (DW)every mountain and island was moved out of its place. 15 And the (DX)kings of the earth, the great men, [an]the rich men, the commanders, the mighty men, every slave and every free man, (DY)hid themselves in the caves and in the rocks of the mountains, 16 (DZ)and said to the mountains and rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who (EA)sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! 17 For the great day of His wrath has come, (EB)and who is able to stand?”
