² The first angel went and poured out his bowl on the land,^(A) and ugly, festering sores^(B) broke out on the people who had the mark of the beast and worshiped its image.^(C)

⁷ The first angel^(A) sounded his trumpet, and there came hail and fire^(B) mixed with blood, and it was hurled down on the earth. A third^(C) of the earth was burned up, a third of the trees were burned up, and all the green grass was burned up.^(D)

¹¹ and cursed^(A) the God of heaven^(B) because of their pains and their sores,^(C) but they refused to repent of what they had done.^(D)

¹⁵ The second beast was given power to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that the image could speak and cause all who refused to worship^(A) the image to be killed.^{(B) 16} It also forced all people, great and small,^(C) rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads,^{(D) 17} so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark,^(E) which is the name of the beast or the number of its name.^(F)

¹⁸ This calls for wisdom.^(G) Let the person who has insight calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man.^[a](H) That number is 666.

²⁷ The Lord will afflict you with the boils of Egypt^(A) and with tumors, festering sores and the itch, from which you cannot be cured.

The Plague of Boils

⁸ Then the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Take handfuls of soot from a furnace and have Moses toss it into the air in the presence of Pharaoh. ⁹ It will become fine dust over the whole land of Egypt, and festering boils^(A) will break out on people and animals throughout the land.”

¹⁰ So they took soot from a furnace and stood before Pharaoh. Moses tossed it into the air, and festering boils broke out on people and animals. ¹¹ The magicians^(B) could not stand before Moses because of the boils that were on them and on all the Egyptians.

²³ Immediately, because Herod did not give praise to God, an angel^(A) of the Lord struck him down,^(B) and he was eaten by worms and died.

²⁰ At his gate was laid a beggar^(A) named Lazarus, covered with sores ²¹ and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table.^(B) Even the dogs came and licked his sores.

²² “The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried.
