Psalm 44:10-25

Good News Translation

¹⁰You made us run from our enemies,
    and they took for themselves what was ours.
¹¹You allowed us to be slaughtered like sheep;
    you scattered us in foreign countries.
¹²You sold your own people for a small price
    as though they had little value.^[a]

¹³Our neighbors see what you did to us,
    and they mock us and laugh at us.
¹⁴You have made us a joke among the nations;
    they shake their heads at us in scorn.
¹⁵I am always in disgrace;
    I am covered with shame
¹⁶    from hearing the sneers and insults
    of my enemies and those who hate me.

¹⁷All this has happened to us,
    even though we have not forgotten you
    or broken the covenant you made with us.
¹⁸We have not been disloyal to you;
    we have not disobeyed your commands.
¹⁹Yet you left us helpless among wild animals;
    you abandoned us in deepest darkness.

²⁰If we had stopped worshiping our God
    and prayed to a foreign god,
²¹you would surely have discovered it,
    because you know our secret thoughts.
²²^(A)But it is on your account that we are being killed all the time,
    that we are treated like sheep to be slaughtered.

²³Wake up, Lord! Why are you asleep?
Rouse yourself Don't reject us forever!
²⁴Why are you hiding from us?
Don't forget our suffering and trouble!

²⁵We fall crushed to the ground;
we lie defeated in the dust.

¹⁰You made us retreat^(A) before the enemy,
    and our adversaries have plundered^(B) us.
¹¹You gave us up to be devoured like sheep^(C)
    and have scattered us among the nations.^(D)
¹²You sold your people for a pittance,^(E)
    gaining nothing from their sale.

¹³You have made us a reproach^(F) to our neighbors,^(G)
    the scorn^(H) and derision^(I) of those around us.
¹⁴You have made us a byword^(J) among the nations;
    the peoples shake their heads^(K) at us.
¹⁵I live in disgrace^(L) all day long,
    and my face is covered with shame^(M)
¹⁶at the taunts^(N) of those who reproach and revile^(O) me,
    because of the enemy, who is bent on revenge.^(P)

¹⁷All this came upon us,
    though we had not forgotten^(Q) you;
    we had not been false to your covenant.
¹⁸Our hearts had not turned^(R) back;
    our feet had not strayed from your path.
¹⁹But you crushed^(S) us and made us a haunt for jackals;^(T)
    you covered us over with deep darkness.^(U)

²⁰If we had forgotten^(V) the name of our God
    or spread out our hands to a foreign god,^(W)
²¹would not God have discovered it,
    since he knows the secrets of the heart?^(X)
²²Yet for your sake we face death all day long;
    we are considered as sheep^(Y) to be slaughtered.^(Z)

²³Awake,^(AA) Lord! Why do you sleep?^(AB)
Rouse yourself!^(AC) Do not reject us forever.^(AD)
²⁴Why do you hide your face^(AE)
and forget^(AF) our misery and oppression?^(AG)
