Psalm 84

Psalm 84^[a]

For the director of music. According to gittith.^[b] Of the Sons of Korah. A psalm.

¹How lovely is your dwelling place,^(A)
    Lord Almighty!
²My soul yearns,^(B) even faints,
    for the courts of the Lord;
my heart and my flesh cry out
    for the living God.^(C)
³Even the sparrow has found a home,
    and the swallow a nest for herself,
    where she may have her young—
a place near your altar,^(D)
    Lord Almighty,^(E) my King^(F) and my God.^(G)
⁴Blessed are those who dwell in your house;
    they are ever praising you.^[c]

⁵Blessed are those whose strength^(H) is in you,
    whose hearts are set on pilgrimage.^(I)
⁶As they pass through the Valley of Baka,
    they make it a place of springs;^(J)
    the autumn^(K) rains also cover it with pools.^[d]
⁷They go from strength to strength,^(L)
    till each appears^(M) before God in Zion.^(N)

⁸Hear my prayer,^(O) Lord God Almighty;
listen to me, God of Jacob.
⁹Look on our shield,^[e]^(P) O God;
look with favor on your anointed one.^(Q)

¹⁰Better is one day in your courts
    than a thousand elsewhere;
I would rather be a doorkeeper^(R) in the house of my God
    than dwell in the tents of the wicked.
¹¹For the Lord God is a sun^(S) and shield;^(T)
    the Lord bestows favor and honor;
no good thing does he withhold^(U)
    from those whose walk is blameless.

¹²Lord Almighty,
blessed^(V) is the one who trusts in you.

¹⁰The Lord will lay bare his holy arm^(A)
in the sight of all the nations,^(B)
and all the ends of the earth^(C) will see
the salvation^(D) of our God.

¹¹Depart,^(E) depart, go out from there!
    Touch no unclean thing!^(F)
Come out from it and be pure,^(G)
    you who carry the articles^(H) of the Lord’s house.
¹²But you will not leave in haste^(I)
    or go in flight;
for the Lord will go before you,^(J)
    the God of Israel will be your rear guard.^(K)

The Suffering and Glory of the Servant

¹³See, my servant^(L) will act wisely^[a];
    he will be raised and lifted up and highly exalted.^(M)
¹⁴Just as there were many who were appalled^(N) at him^[b]—
    his appearance was so disfigured^(O) beyond that of any human being
    and his form marred beyond human likeness^(P)—
¹⁵so he will sprinkle^(Q) many nations,^[c]
    and kings^(R) will shut their mouths^(S) because of him.
For what they were not told, they will see,
    and what they have not heard, they will understand.^(T)

Believers Who Have Died

¹³Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed^(A) about those who sleep in death,^(B) so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope.^(C) ¹⁴For we believe that Jesus died and rose again,^(D) and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.^(E) ¹⁵According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord,^(F) will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep.^(G) ¹⁶For the Lord himself will come down from heaven,^(H) with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel^(I) and with the trumpet call of God,^(J) and the dead in Christ will rise first.^(K) ¹⁷After that, we who are still alive and are left^(L) will be caught up together with them in the clouds^(M) to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord^(N) forever. ¹⁸Therefore encourage one another^(O) with these words.
