56 上帝啊，求你怜悯我，
因为仇敌攻击我，整日迫害我。
²我的仇敌整日攻击我，
许多人狂妄地迫害我。
³我害怕的时候，
仍要倚靠你。
⁴我赞美上帝的应许，
我信靠祂，就不惧怕，
区区世人能把我怎样？
⁵他们整天歪曲我的话，
总是图谋害我。
⁶他们勾结起来，
暗中监视我的行踪，
伺机害我。
⁷上帝啊，
不要让这些作恶的人逃脱，
求你在怒中毁灭他们。
⁸你知道我的哀伤，
你把我的眼泪收在袋中。
我的遭遇都记录在你的册子上。
⁹我向你求救的时候，
敌人都落荒而逃。
我知道上帝是我的帮助。
¹⁰我因上帝的应许而赞美祂，
我因耶和华的应许而赞美祂。
¹¹我信靠上帝，就不惧怕，
区区世人能把我怎样？
¹²上帝啊，
我要恪守向你发的誓言，
献上感恩祭。
¹³因为你救我脱离死亡，
使我没有跌倒，

56 God, be ·merciful [gracious] to me because people are ·chasing [trampling; hounding; snapping at] me;
    the battle has ·pressed [harrassed] me all day long.
²My enemies have ·chased [trampled on; hounded; snapped at] me all day;
    there are many proud people fighting me.
³When I am afraid,
    I will ·trust [have confidence in] you.
⁴I praise God for his word.
    I ·trust [have confidence in] God, so I am not afraid.
What can ·human beings [^Lflesh] do to me?

⁵All day long they ·twist [find fault with] my words;
    all their evil ·plans [or thoughts] are against me.
⁶They ·wait [or attack; or strive]. They hide.
    They watch my ·steps [^Lheels],
    hoping to kill me.
⁷God, do not let them escape;
    ·punish [^Lbring down] the ·foreign nations [peoples] in your anger.
⁸You have ·recorded [recounted] my ·troubles [wanderings].
    You have ·kept a list of my tears [^Lput my tears in your bottle].
Aren’t they in your records?

⁹On the day I call for help, my enemies will ·be defeated [^Lturn back].
    I know that God is on my side.
¹⁰I praise God for his word to me;
    I praise the Lord for his word.
¹¹I ·trust [have confidence] in God. I will not be afraid.
    What can people do to me?

¹²God, I must keep my ·promises [vows] to you.
    I will give you my ·offerings to thank you [thank offerings],
¹³because you have ·saved [protected] me from death.
    You have kept ·me from being defeated [^Lmy feet from falling].
So I will walk ·with [^Lin the presence of] God
    in light ·among [of] the living.

¹Be merciful to me,^(A) my God,
    for my enemies are in hot pursuit;^(B)
    all day long they press their attack.^(C)
²My adversaries pursue me all day long;^(D)
    in their pride many are attacking me.^(E)

³When I am afraid,^(F) I put my trust in you.^(G)
⁴ In God, whose word I praise—^(H)
in God I trust and am not afraid.^(I)
What can mere mortals do to me?^(J)

⁵All day long they twist my words;^(K)
    all their schemes are for my ruin.
⁶They conspire,^(L) they lurk,
    they watch my steps,^(M)
    hoping to take my life.^(N)
⁷Because of their wickedness do not^[c] let them escape;^(O)
    in your anger, God, bring the nations down.^(P)

⁸Record my misery;
    list my tears on your scroll^[d]^(Q)—
    are they not in your record?^(R)
⁹Then my enemies will turn back^(S)
    when I call for help.^(T)
    By this I will know that God is for me.^(U)

¹⁰In God, whose word I praise,
in the Lord, whose word I praise—
¹¹in God I trust and am not afraid.
What can man do to me?

¹²I am under vows^(V) to you, my God;
    I will present my thank offerings to you.
¹³For you have delivered me from death^(W)
    and my feet from stumbling,
that I may walk before God
    in the light of life.^(X)
