Isaiah 53
English Standard Version
53 (A)Who has believed what he has heard from us?[a]
And to whom has (B)the arm of the Lord been revealed?
2 For he grew up before him like a young plant,
(C)and like a root out of dry ground;
(D)he had no form or majesty that we should look at him,
and no beauty that we should desire him.
3 (E)He was despised and rejected[b] by men,
a man of sorrows[c] and acquainted with[d] grief;[e]
and as one from whom men hide their faces[f]
he was despised, and (F)we esteemed him not.
4 (G)Surely he has borne our griefs
and carried our sorrows;
yet we esteemed him stricken,
(H)smitten by God, and afflicted.
5 (I)But he was pierced for our transgressions;
he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
(J)and with his wounds we are healed.
6 (K)All we like sheep have gone astray;
we have turned—every one—to his own way;
(L)and the Lord has laid on him
the iniquity of us all.
7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted,
(M)yet he opened not his mouth;
(N)like a (O)lamb that is led to the slaughter,
and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent,
so he opened not his mouth.
8 By oppression and judgment he was taken away;
and as for his generation, (P)who considered
that he was cut off out of the land of the living,
stricken for the transgression of my people?
9 And they made his grave with the wicked
(Q)and with a rich man in his death,
although (R)he had done no violence,
and there was no deceit in his mouth.
10 Yet (S)it was the will of the Lord to crush him;
he has put him to grief;[g]
(T)when his soul makes[h] an offering for guilt,
he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days;
(U)the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.
11 Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see[i] and be satisfied;
by his knowledge shall (V)the righteous one, my servant,
(W)make many to be accounted righteous,
(X)and he shall bear their iniquities.
12 (Y)Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many,[j]
(Z)and he shall divide the spoil with the strong,[k]
because he poured out his soul to death
and was numbered with the transgressors;
(AA)yet he bore the sin of many,
and makes intercession for the transgressors.

The Word Became Flesh
1 (A)In the beginning was (B)the Word, and (C)the Word was with God, and (D)the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 (E)All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 (F)In him was life,[a] and (G)the life was the light of men. 5 (H)The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
6 There was a man (I)sent from God, whose name was (J)John. 7 He came as a (K)witness, to bear witness about the light, (L)that all might believe through him. 8 (M)He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.
9 (N)The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet (O)the world did not know him. 11 He came to (P)his own,[b] and (Q)his own people[c] (R)did not receive him. 12 But to all who did receive him, (S)who believed in his name, (T)he gave the right (U)to become (V)children of God, 13 who (W)were born, (X)not of blood (Y)nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
14 And (Z)the Word (AA)became flesh and (AB)dwelt among us, (AC)and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son[d] from the Father, full of (AD)grace and (AE)truth. 15 ((AF)John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, (AG)‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’”) 16 For from (AH)his fullness we have all received, (AI)grace upon grace.[e] 17 For (AJ)the law was given through Moses; (AK)grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 (AL)No one has ever seen God; (AM)the only God,[f] who is at the Father's side,[g] (AN)he has made him known.

6 For (A)while we were still weak, at the right time (B)Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— 8 but (C)God shows his love for us in that (D)while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Since, therefore, (E)we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from (F)the wrath of God. 10 For if (G)while we were enemies (H)we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by (I)his life. 11 More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received (J)reconciliation.
Death in Adam, Life in Christ
12 Therefore, just as (K)sin came into the world through one man, and (L)death through sin, and (M)so death spread to all men[a] because (N)all sinned— 13 for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but (O)sin is not counted where there is no law. 14 Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not (P)like the transgression of Adam, (Q)who was a type of (R)the one who was to come.
15 But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man's trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for (S)many. 16 And the free gift is not like the result of that one man's sin. For (T)the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought (U)justification. 17 For if, because of one man's trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness (V)reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.
18 Therefore, as one trespass[b] led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness[c] leads to justification and life for (W)all men. 19 For as by the one man's (X)disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's (Y)obedience the many will be made righteous. 20 Now (Z)the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, (AA)grace abounded all the more, 21 so that, (AB)as sin reigned in death, (AC)grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

5 (A)Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,[a] 6 (B)who, though he was in (C)the form of God, did not count equality with God (D)a thing to be grasped,[b] 7 but (E)emptied himself, by taking the form of a (F)servant,[c] (G)being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by (H)becoming obedient to the point of death, (I)even death on a cross. 9 (J)Therefore (K)God has (L)highly exalted him and bestowed on him (M)the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus (N)every knee should bow, (O)in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and (P)every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is (Q)Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

The Preeminence of Christ
15 (F)He is the image of (G)the invisible God, (H)the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by[a] him all things were created, (I)in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether (J)thrones or (K)dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created (L)through him and for him. 17 And (M)he is before all things, and in him all things (N)hold together. 18 And (O)he is the head of the body, the church. He is (P)the beginning, (Q)the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. 19 For (R)in him all the (S)fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and (T)through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, (U)making peace (V)by the blood of his cross.
21 (W)And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, (X)doing evil deeds, 22 he has now reconciled (Y)in his body of flesh by his death, (Z)in order to present you holy and blameless and (AA)above reproach before him,
