The Law of the Lord Is Perfect

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

19 ^(A)The heavens declare the glory of God,
    and the sky above^[a] proclaims his handiwork.
²Day to day pours out speech,
    and night to night reveals knowledge.
³There is no speech, nor are there words,
    whose voice is not heard.
⁴^(B)Their ^(C)voice^[b] goes out through all the earth,
    and their words to the end of the world.
In them he has set a tent for ^(D)the sun,
⁵    ^(E)which comes out like ^(F)a bridegroom leaving his chamber,
    and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy.
⁶Its rising is from the end of the heavens,
    and its circuit to the end of them,
    and there is nothing hidden from its heat.

⁷^(G)The law of the Lord is perfect,^[c]
    ^(H)reviving the soul;
^(I)the testimony of the Lord is ^(J)sure,
    ^(K)making wise ^(L)the simple;
⁸^(M)the precepts of the Lord are right,
    rejoicing the heart;
the commandment of the Lord is ^(N)pure,
    ^(O)enlightening the eyes;
⁹the fear of the Lord is clean,
    enduring forever;
the rules^[d] of the Lord are ^(P)true,
    and righteous altogether.
¹⁰More to be desired are they than ^(Q)gold,
    even much ^(R)fine gold;
^(S)sweeter also than honey
    and drippings of ^(T)the honeycomb.
¹¹Moreover, by them is your servant warned;
    ^(U)in keeping them there is great reward.

¹²^(V)Who can discern his errors?
    ^(W)Declare me innocent from ^(X)hidden faults.
¹³^(Y)Keep back your servant also from ^(Z)presumptuous sins;
    let them not have ^(AA)dominion over me!
Then I shall be blameless,
    and innocent of great transgression.

¹⁴Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
be acceptable in your sight,
O Lord, my ^(AB)rock and my ^(AC)redeemer.

New Tablets of Stone

10 “At that time the Lord said to me, ^(A)‘Cut for yourself two tablets of stone like the first, and come up to me on the mountain and ^(B)make an ark of wood. ²And I will write on the tablets the words that were on the first tablets that you broke, and ^(C)you shall put them in the ark.’ ³So I made an ark ^(D)of acacia wood, and ^(E)cut two tablets of stone like the first, and went up the mountain with the two tablets in my hand. ⁴And ^(F)he wrote on the tablets, in the same writing as before, the Ten Commandments^[a] ^(G)that the Lord had spoken to you on the mountain out of the midst of the fire ^(H)on the day of the assembly. And the Lord gave them to me. ⁵Then I turned and ^(I)came down from the mountain and ^(J)put the tablets in the ark that I had made. ^(K)And there they are, as the Lord commanded me.”

⁶(The people of Israel ^(L)journeyed from Beeroth Bene-jaakan^[b] to Moserah. ^(M)There Aaron died, and there he was buried. And his son Eleazar ministered as priest in his place. ⁷^(N)From there they journeyed to Gudgodah, and from Gudgodah to Jotbathah, a land with brooks of water. ⁸At that time ^(O)the Lord set apart the tribe of Levi ^(P)to carry the ark of the covenant of the Lord ^(Q)to stand before the Lord to minister to him and ^(R)to bless in his name, to this day. ⁹^(S)Therefore Levi has no portion or inheritance with his brothers. The Lord is his inheritance, as the Lord your God said to him.)

¹⁰^(T)“I myself stayed on the mountain, as at the first time, forty days and forty nights, ^(U)and the Lord listened to me that time also. The Lord was unwilling to destroy you. ¹¹^(V)And the Lord said to me, ‘Arise, go on your journey at the head of the people, so that they may go in and possess the land, which I swore to their fathers to give them.’

Circumcise Your Heart

¹²“And now, Israel, ^(W)what does the Lord your God require of you, but ^(X)to fear the Lord your God, ^(Y)to walk in all his ways, ^(Z)to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, ¹³and ^(AA)to keep the commandments and statutes of the Lord, which I am commanding you today ^(AB)for your good? ¹⁴Behold, ^(AC)to the Lord your God belong heaven and the heaven of heavens, ^(AD)the earth with all that is in it. ¹⁵Yet ^(AE)the Lord set his heart in love on your fathers and chose their offspring after them, you above all peoples, as you are this day. ¹⁶Circumcise therefore ^(AF)the foreskin of your heart, and be no longer ^(AG)stubborn. ¹⁷For the Lord your God is ^(AH)God of gods and ^(AI)Lord of lords, ^(AJ)the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who is ^(AK)not partial and takes no bribe. ¹⁸^(AL)He executes justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the sojourner, giving him food and clothing. ¹⁹^(AM)Love the sojourner, therefore, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt. ²⁰^(AN)You shall fear the Lord your God. You shall serve him and ^(AO)hold fast to him, and ^(AP)by his name you shall swear. ²¹^(AQ)He is your praise. He is your God, ^(AR)who has done for you these great and terrifying things that your eyes have seen. ²²Your fathers went down to Egypt ^(AS)seventy persons, and now the Lord your God has made you ^(AT)as numerous as the stars of heaven.

The Beatitudes

²⁰And ^(A)he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, ^(B)and said:

“Blessed are you who are poor, for ^(C)yours is the kingdom of God.

²¹^(D)“Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you shall be satisfied.

^(E)“Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh.

²²“Blessed are you when ^(F)people hate you and when they ^(G)exclude you and revile you and ^(H)spurn your name as evil, ^(I)on account of the Son of Man! ²³^(J)Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for ^(K)so their fathers did to the prophets.

Jesus Pronounces Woes

²⁴^(L)“But woe to you who are rich, ^(M)for you ^(N)have received your consolation.

²⁵“Woe to you who are full now, for ^(O)you shall be hungry.

“Woe to ^(P)you who laugh now, ^(Q)for you shall mourn and weep.

²⁶“Woe to you, ^(R)when all people speak well of you, for ^(S)so their fathers did to ^(T)the false prophets.

Love Your Enemies

²⁷“But I say to you who hear, ^(U)Love your enemies, ^(V)do good to those who hate you, ²⁸^(W)bless those who curse you, ^(X)pray for those who abuse you. ²⁹^(Y)To one who ^(Z)strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also, and from one who takes away your cloak do not withhold your tunic^[a] either. ³⁰^(AA)Give to everyone who begs from you, and from one who takes away your goods do not demand them back. ³¹And ^(AB)as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them.

³²^(AC)“If you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. ³³And if you do good to those who do good to you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. ³⁴And ^(AD)if you ^(AE)lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to get back the same amount. ³⁵But ^(AF)love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and ^(AG)you will be sons of ^(AH)the Most High, for ^(AI)he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil. ³⁶^(AJ)Be merciful, even as ^(AK)your Father is merciful.

Judging Others

³⁷^(AL)^(AM)“Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; ^(AN)forgive, and you will be forgiven; ³⁸^(AO)give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put ^(AP)into your lap. For ^(AQ)with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”
