⁴⁰ For as Jonah was in the belly of the huge fish three days and three nights,^(A) so the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights.

²² So when He was raised from the dead,^(A) His disciples remembered that He had said this.^(B) And they believed the Scripture^(C) and the statement Jesus had made.

²⁵ For David says of Him:

²⁹ “Brothers, I can confidently speak to you about the patriarch David: He is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.^{(C) 30} Since he was a prophet, he knew that God had sworn an oath to him to seat one of his descendants^[b][c] on his throne.^{(D) 31} Seeing this in advance, he spoke concerning the resurrection of the Messiah:

³² “God has resurrected^(F) this Jesus. We are all witnesses of this.

³³ God has fulfilled this for us, their children, by raising up Jesus, as it is written in the second Psalm:

³⁴ Since He raised Him from the dead, never to return to decay, He has spoken in this way, I will grant you the faithful covenant blessings^[c] made to David.^{(B)[d] 35} Therefore He also says in another passage, You will not allow Your Holy One to see decay.^(C)[e]

²² To this very day, I have obtained help that comes from God, and I stand and testify to both small and great, saying nothing else than what the prophets and Moses said would take place^(A)— ²³ that the Messiah must suffer, and that as the first to rise from the dead, He would proclaim light to our people and to the Gentiles.”^(B)
