Description of a Citizen of Zion.

A Psalm of David.

15 Lord, who may reside (A)in Your tent?
Who may settle on Your (B)holy hill?
One who (C)walks with integrity, practices righteousness,
And (D)speaks truth in his heart.
He (E)does not slander [a]with his tongue,
Nor (F)do evil to his neighbor,
Nor (G)bring shame on his friend;
A despicable person is despised in his eyes,
But he (H)honors those who fear the Lord;
He (I)takes an oath to his own detriment, and does not change;
He (J)does not [b]lend his money [c]at interest,
Nor (K)does he take a bribe against the innocent.
(L)One who does these things will never be shaken.

The Lord, the Psalmist’s Portion in Life and Salvation in Death.

A [d]Mikhtam of David.

16 (M)Protect me, God, for (N)I take refuge in You.
[e]I said to the Lord, “You are [f]my Lord;
I (O)have nothing good besides You.”
As for the [g](P)saints who are on the earth,
[h]They are the majestic ones; (Q)all my delight is in them.
[i]The (R)pains of those who have acquired another god will be multiplied;
I will not pour out their drink offerings of (S)blood,
Nor will I (T)take their names upon my lips.

The Lord is the (U)portion of my inheritance and my (V)cup;
You support my (W)lot.
The measuring (X)lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
Indeed, my inheritance is (Y)beautiful to me.

I will bless the Lord who has (Z)advised me;
Indeed, my [j](AA)mind instructs me in the night.
(AB)I have (AC)set the Lord continually before me;
Because He is (AD)at my right hand, (AE)I will not be shaken.
Therefore (AF)my heart is glad and (AG)my glory rejoices;
My flesh also will (AH)dwell securely.
10 For You (AI)will not abandon my soul to [k]Sheol;
You will not [l](AJ)allow Your [m]Holy One to [n]undergo decay.
11 You will make known to me (AK)the way of life;
In (AL)Your presence is fullness of joy;
In Your right hand there are (AM)pleasures forever.

Prayer for Protection against Oppressors.

A Prayer of David.

17 Hear a (AN)just cause, Lord, (AO)give Your attention to my cry;
(AP)Listen to my prayer, which is not from (AQ)deceitful lips.
Let (AR)my [o]judgment come forth from Your presence;
Let Your eyes look with (AS)integrity.
You have (AT)put my heart to the test;
You have visited me by night;
You have (AU)sifted me and (AV)You find [p]nothing;
My (AW)intent is that my mouth will not offend.
As for the works of mankind, (AX)by the word of Your lips
I have kept from the (AY)ways of the violent.
My (AZ)steps have held to Your [q]paths.
My (BA)feet have not slipped.

I have (BB)called upon You, for You will answer me, God;
(BC)Incline Your ear to me, hear my speech.
(BD)Show Your wonderful faithfulness,
(BE)Savior of those who take refuge [r]at Your right hand
From those who rise up against them.
Keep me as [s]the (BF)apple of the eye;
Hide me (BG)in the shadow of Your wings
From the (BH)wicked who deal violently with me,
My (BI)deadly enemies who surround me.
10 They have (BJ)closed their [t]unfeeling hearts,
With their mouths they (BK)speak proudly.
11 They have now (BL)surrounded us in our steps;
They set their eyes (BM)to cast us down to the ground.
12 He is (BN)like a lion that is eager to tear,
And as a young lion (BO)lurking in secret places.

13 (BP)Arise, Lord, confront him, (BQ)make him bow down;
(BR)Save my soul from the wicked with (BS)Your sword,
14 From people by (BT)Your hand, Lord,
From people [u]of the world, (BU)whose portion is in this life,
And whose belly You (BV)fill with Your treasure;
They are satisfied with children,
And leave their abundance to their babies.
15 As for me, I shall (BW)behold Your face in righteousness;
(BX)I shall be satisfied with Your (BY)likeness when I awake.

The Lord Praised for Rescuing David.

For the music director. A Psalm of David, the servant of the Lord, [v]who spoke to the Lord the words of this song on the day that the Lord rescued him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. And he said,

18 “I love You, Lord, (BZ)my strength.”
The Lord is (CA)my rock and (CB)my fortress and my (CC)savior,
My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge;
My (CD)shield and the (CE)horn of my salvation, my (CF)stronghold.
I call upon the Lord, who is (CG)worthy to be praised,
And I am (CH)saved from my enemies.

The (CI)ropes of death encompassed me,
And the (CJ)torrents of [w]destruction [x]terrified me.
The (CK)ropes of [y]Sheol surrounded me;
The snares of death confronted me.
In my (CL)distress I called upon the Lord,
And cried to my God for help;
He heard my voice (CM)from His temple,
And my (CN)cry for help before Him came into His ears.

Then the (CO)earth shook and quaked;
And the (CP)foundations of the mountains were trembling
And were shaken, because He was angry.
Smoke went up [z]out of His nostrils,
And (CQ)fire from His mouth was devouring;
Coals burned from it.
He also (CR)bowed the heavens down low, and came down
With thick (CS)darkness under His feet.
10 He rode on a (CT)cherub and flew;
And He sped on the (CU)wings of the wind.
11 He made (CV)darkness His hiding place, (CW)His [aa]canopy around Him,
Darkness of waters, thick clouds.
12 From the (CX)brightness before Him passed His thick clouds,
Hailstones and (CY)coals of fire.
13 The Lord also (CZ)thundered in the heavens,
And the Most High uttered His voice,
Hailstones and coals of fire.
14 He (DA)sent out His arrows, and scattered them,
And lightning flashes in abundance, and [ab]routed them.
15 Then the (DB)channels of water appeared,
And the foundations of the world were exposed
By Your (DC)rebuke, Lord,
At the blast of the (DD)breath of Your nostrils.

16 He (DE)sent from on high, He took me;
He drew me out of (DF)many waters.
17 He (DG)saved me from my strong enemy,
And from those who hated me, for they were (DH)too mighty for me.
18 They confronted me in (DI)the day of my disaster,
But (DJ)the Lord was my support.
19 He also brought me out into an (DK)open place;
He rescued me, because (DL)He delighted in me.

20 The Lord has (DM)rewarded me according to my righteousness;
According to the (DN)cleanness of my hands He has repaid me.
21 For I have (DO)kept the ways of the Lord,
And have (DP)not acted wickedly against my God.
22 For all (DQ)His judgments were before me,
And I did not put away His (DR)statutes from me.
23 I was also [ac](DS)blameless with Him,
And I (DT)kept myself from my wrongdoing.
24 Therefore the Lord has (DU)repaid me according to my righteousness,
According to the cleanness of my hands in His eyes.

25 With (DV)the faithful You show Yourself faithful;
With the [ad]blameless (DW)You prove Yourself blameless;
26 With the pure You show Yourself (DX)pure,
And with the crooked (DY)You show Yourself [ae]astute.
27 For You (DZ)save an afflicted people,
But You humiliate (EA)haughty eyes.
28 For You (EB)light my lamp;
The Lord my God (EC)illumines my darkness.
29 For by You I can (ED)run at a [af]troop of warriors;
And by my God I can (EE)leap over a wall.

30 As for God, His way is [ag](EF)blameless;
The (EG)word of the Lord is refined;
He is a (EH)shield to all who take refuge in Him.
31 For (EI)who is God, but the Lord?
And who is a (EJ)rock, except our God,
32 The God who (EK)encircles me with strength,
And [ah]makes my way [ai](EL)blameless?
33 He (EM)makes my feet like deer’s feet,
And (EN)sets me up on my high places.
34 He (EO)trains my hands for battle,
So that my arms can (EP)bend a bow of bronze.
35 You have also given me (EQ)the shield of Your salvation,
And Your (ER)right hand upholds me;
And (ES)Your [aj]gentleness makes me great.
36 You (ET)enlarge my steps under me,
And my [ak](EU)feet have not slipped.

37 I (EV)pursued my enemies and overtook them,
And I did not turn back (EW)until they were consumed.
38 I shattered them, so that they were (EX)not able to rise;
They fell (EY)under my feet.
39 For You have (EZ)encircled me with strength for battle;
You have forced those who rose up against me (FA)to bow down under me.
40 You have also made my enemies (FB)turn their backs to me,
And I [al](FC)destroyed those who hated me.
41 They cried for help, but there was (FD)no one to save,
They cried to the Lord, but (FE)He did not answer them.
42 Then I beat them fine like the (FF)dust before the wind;
I emptied them out like the mud of the streets.

43 You have rescued me from the (FG)contentions of the people;
You have placed me as (FH)head of the nations;
A (FI)people whom I have not known serve me.
44 As soon as they hear, they obey me;
Foreigners (FJ)pretend to obey me.
45 Foreigners (FK)lose heart,
And (FL)come trembling out of their [am]fortresses.

46 The Lord (FM)lives, and blessed be (FN)my rock;
And exalted be (FO)the God of my salvation,
47 The God who (FP)executes vengeance for me,
And (FQ)subdues peoples under me.
48 He (FR)rescues me from my enemies;
You indeed (FS)lift me above those who rise up against me;
You rescue me from a (FT)violent man.
49 Therefore I will (FU)give thanks to You among the nations, Lord,
And I will (FV)sing praises to Your name.
50 He gives great [an](FW)salvation to His king,
And shows faithfulness to (FX)His anointed,
To David and (FY)his [ao]descendants forever.
