Psalm 119:129-136

¹²⁹Your statutes are wonderful;^(A)
    therefore I obey them.^(B)
¹³⁰The unfolding of your words gives light;^(C)
    it gives understanding to the simple.^(D)
¹³¹I open my mouth and pant,^(E)
    longing for your commands.^(F)
¹³²Turn to me^(G) and have mercy^(H) on me,
    as you always do to those who love your name.^(I)
¹³³Direct my footsteps according to your word;^(J)
    let no sin rule^(K) over me.
¹³⁴Redeem me from human oppression,^(L)
    that I may obey your precepts.^(M)
¹³⁵Make your face shine^(N) on your servant
    and teach me your decrees.^(O)
¹³⁶Streams of tears^(P) flow from my eyes,
    for your law is not obeyed.^(Q)

1 Kings 1:38-48

New International Version

³⁸So Zadok^(A) the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, the Kerethites^(B) and the Pelethites went down and had Solomon mount King David’s mule, and they escorted him to Gihon.^(C) ³⁹Zadok the priest took the horn of oil^(D) from the sacred tent^(E) and anointed Solomon. Then they sounded the trumpet^(F) and all the people shouted,^(G) “Long live King Solomon!” ⁴⁰And all the people went up after him, playing pipes^(H) and rejoicing greatly, so that the ground shook with the sound.

⁴¹Adonijah and all the guests who were with him heard it as they were finishing their feast. On hearing the sound of the trumpet, Joab asked, “What’s the meaning of all the noise in the city?”^(I)

⁴²Even as he was speaking, Jonathan^(J) son of Abiathar the priest arrived. Adonijah said, “Come in. A worthy man like you must be bringing good news.”^(K)

⁴³“Not at all!” Jonathan answered. “Our lord King David has made Solomon king. ⁴⁴The king has sent with him Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, the Kerethites and the Pelethites, and they have put him on the king’s mule, ⁴⁵and Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king at Gihon. From there they have gone up cheering, and the city resounds^(L) with it. That’s the noise you hear. ⁴⁶Moreover, Solomon has taken his seat^(M) on the royal throne. ⁴⁷Also, the royal officials have come to congratulate our lord King David, saying, ‘May your God make Solomon’s name more famous than yours and his throne greater^(N) than yours!’ And the king bowed in worship on his bed ⁴⁸and said, ‘Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, who has allowed my eyes to see a successor^(O) on my throne today.’”

Acts 7:44-53

⁴⁴“Our ancestors had the tabernacle of the covenant law^(A) with them in the wilderness. It had been made as God directed Moses, according to the pattern he had seen.^(B) ⁴⁵After receiving the tabernacle, our ancestors under Joshua brought it with them when they took the land from the nations God drove out before them.^(C) It remained in the land until the time of David,^(D) ⁴⁶who enjoyed God’s favor and asked that he might provide a dwelling place for the God of Jacob.^[a]^(E) ⁴⁷But it was Solomon who built a house for him.^(F)

⁴⁸“However, the Most High^(G) does not live in houses made by human hands.^(H) As the prophet says:

⁴⁹“‘Heaven is my throne,
and the earth is my footstool.^(I)
What kind of house will you build for me?
says the Lord.
Or where will my resting place be?
⁵⁰Has not my hand made all these things?’^[b]^(J)

⁵¹“You stiff-necked people!^(K) Your hearts^(L) and ears are still uncircumcised. You are just like your ancestors: You always resist the Holy Spirit! ⁵²Was there ever a prophet your ancestors did not persecute?^(M) They even killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One. And now you have betrayed and murdered him^(N)— ⁵³you who have received the law that was given through angels^(O) but have not obeyed it.”
