Psalm 116

I love the Lord,(A) for he heard my voice;
    he heard my cry(B) for mercy.(C)
Because he turned his ear(D) to me,
    I will call on him as long as I live.

The cords of death(E) entangled me,
    the anguish of the grave came over me;
    I was overcome by distress and sorrow.
Then I called on the name(F) of the Lord:
    Lord, save me!(G)

The Lord is gracious and righteous;(H)
    our God is full of compassion.(I)
The Lord protects the unwary;
    when I was brought low,(J) he saved me.(K)

Return to your rest,(L) my soul,
    for the Lord has been good(M) to you.

For you, Lord, have delivered me(N) from death,
    my eyes from tears,
    my feet from stumbling,
that I may walk before the Lord(O)
    in the land of the living.(P)

10 I trusted(Q) in the Lord when I said,
    “I am greatly afflicted”;(R)
11 in my alarm I said,
    “Everyone is a liar.”(S)

12 What shall I return to the Lord
    for all his goodness(T) to me?

13 I will lift up the cup of salvation
    and call on the name(U) of the Lord.
14 I will fulfill my vows(V) to the Lord
    in the presence of all his people.

15 Precious in the sight(W) of the Lord
    is the death of his faithful servants.(X)
16 Truly I am your servant, Lord;(Y)
    I serve you just as my mother did;(Z)
    you have freed me from my chains.(AA)

17 I will sacrifice a thank offering(AB) to you
    and call on the name of the Lord.
18 I will fulfill my vows(AC) to the Lord
    in the presence of all his people,
19 in the courts(AD) of the house of the Lord
    in your midst, Jerusalem.(AE)

Praise the Lord.[a]

  1. Psalm 116:19 Hebrew Hallelu Yah

But godliness with contentment(A) is great gain.(B) For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.(C) But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.(D) Those who want to get rich(E) fall into temptation and a trap(F) and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money(G) is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith(H) and pierced themselves with many griefs.(I)

Final Charge to Timothy

11 But you, man of God,(J) flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness,(K) faith, love,(L) endurance and gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight(M) of the faith. Take hold of(N) the eternal life(O) to which you were called when you made your good confession(P) in the presence of many witnesses. 13 In the sight of God, who gives life to everything, and of Christ Jesus, who while testifying before Pontius Pilate(Q) made the good confession,(R) I charge you(S) 14 to keep this command without spot or blame(T) until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ,(U) 15 which God will bring about in his own time(V)—God, the blessed(W) and only Ruler,(X) the King of kings and Lord of lords,(Y) 16 who alone is immortal(Z) and who lives in unapproachable light,(AA) whom no one has seen or can see.(AB) To him be honor and might forever. Amen.(AC)

17 Command those who are rich(AD) in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth,(AE) which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God,(AF) who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.(AG) 18 Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds,(AH) and to be generous and willing to share.(AI) 19 In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves(AJ) as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of(AK) the life that is truly life.
