Psalm 99

¹The Lord reigns,^(A)
    let the nations tremble;^(B)
he sits enthroned^(C) between the cherubim,^(D)
    let the earth shake.
²Great is the Lord^(E) in Zion;^(F)
    he is exalted^(G) over all the nations.
³Let them praise^(H) your great and awesome name^(I)—
    he is holy.^(J)

⁴The King^(K) is mighty, he loves justice^(L)—
    you have established equity;^(M)
in Jacob you have done
    what is just and right.^(N)
⁵Exalt^(O) the Lord our God
    and worship at his footstool;
    he is holy.

⁶Moses^(P) and Aaron^(Q) were among his priests,
    Samuel^(R) was among those who called on his name;
they called on the Lord
    and he answered^(S) them.
⁷He spoke to them from the pillar of cloud;^(T)
    they kept his statutes and the decrees he gave them.

⁸Lord our God,
    you answered them;
you were to Israel a forgiving God,^(U)
    though you punished^(V) their misdeeds.^[a]
⁹Exalt the Lord our God
    and worship at his holy mountain,
    for the Lord our God is holy.

¹⁸But Samuel was ministering^(A) before the Lord—a boy wearing a linen ephod.^(B) ¹⁹Each year his mother made him a little robe and took it to him when she went up with her husband to offer the annual^(C) sacrifice. ²⁰Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, saying, “May the Lord give you children by this woman to take the place of the one she prayed^(D) for and gave to^[a] the Lord.” Then they would go home. ²¹And the Lord was gracious to Hannah;^(E) she gave birth to three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile, the boy Samuel grew^(F) up in the presence of the Lord.

The Council at Jerusalem

15 Certain people^(A) came down from Judea to Antioch and were teaching the believers:^(B) “Unless you are circumcised,^(C) according to the custom taught by Moses,^(D) you cannot be saved.” ²This brought Paul and Barnabas into sharp dispute and debate with them. So Paul and Barnabas were appointed, along with some other believers, to go up to Jerusalem^(E) to see the apostles and elders^(F) about this question. ³The church sent them on their way, and as they traveled through Phoenicia^(G) and Samaria, they told how the Gentiles had been converted.^(H) This news made all the believers very glad. ⁴When they came to Jerusalem, they were welcomed by the church and the apostles and elders, to whom they reported everything God had done through them.^(I)

⁵Then some of the believers who belonged to the party^(J) of the Pharisees^(K) stood up and said, “The Gentiles must be circumcised and required to keep the law of Moses.”^(L)

Acts 15:22-35

The Council’s Letter to Gentile Believers

²²Then the apostles and elders,^(A) with the whole church, decided to choose some of their own men and send them to Antioch^(B) with Paul and Barnabas. They chose Judas (called Barsabbas) and Silas,^(C) men who were leaders among the believers. ²³With them they sent the following letter:

The apostles and elders, your brothers,

To the Gentile believers in Antioch,^(D) Syria^(E) and Cilicia:^(F)

Greetings.^(G)

²⁴We have heard that some went out from us without our authorization and disturbed you, troubling your minds by what they said.^(H) ²⁵So we all agreed to choose some men and send them to you with our dear friends Barnabas and Paul— ²⁶men who have risked their lives^(I) for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. ²⁷Therefore we are sending Judas and Silas^(J) to confirm by word of mouth what we are writing. ²⁸It seemed good to the Holy Spirit^(K) and to us not to burden you with anything beyond the following requirements: ²⁹You are to abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from sexual immorality.^(L) You will do well to avoid these things.

³⁰So the men were sent off and went down to Antioch, where they gathered the church together and delivered the letter. ³¹The people read it and were glad for its encouraging message. ³²Judas and Silas,^(M) who themselves were prophets,^(N) said much to encourage and strengthen the believers. ³³After spending some time there, they were sent off by the believers with the blessing of peace^(O) to return to those who had sent them. ^[34]^[a] ³⁵But Paul and Barnabas remained in Antioch, where they and many others taught and preached^(P) the word of the Lord.^(Q)
