Psalm 80^[a]

For the director of music. To the tune of “The Lilies of the Covenant.” Of Asaph. A psalm.

¹Hear us, Shepherd of Israel,
    you who lead Joseph like a flock.^(A)
You who sit enthroned between the cherubim,^(B)
    shine forth ²before Ephraim, Benjamin and Manasseh.^(C)
Awaken^(D) your might;
    come and save us.^(E)

⁸You transplanted a vine^(A) from Egypt;
    you drove out^(B) the nations and planted^(C) it.
⁹You cleared the ground for it,
    and it took root and filled the land.
¹⁰The mountains were covered with its shade,
    the mighty cedars with its branches.
¹¹Its branches reached as far as the Sea,^[a]
    its shoots as far as the River.^[b]^(D)

¹²Why have you broken down its walls^(E)
    so that all who pass by pick its grapes?
¹³Boars from the forest ravage^(F) it,
    and insects from the fields feed on it.
¹⁴Return to us, God Almighty!
    Look down from heaven and see!^(G)
Watch over this vine,
¹⁵    the root your right hand has planted,
    the son^[c] you have raised up for yourself.

¹⁶Your vine is cut down, it is burned with fire;^(H)
    at your rebuke^(I) your people perish.
¹⁷Let your hand rest on the man at your right hand,
    the son of man^(J) you have raised up for yourself.
¹⁸Then we will not turn away from you;
    revive^(K) us, and we will call on your name.

¹⁹Restore us, Lord God Almighty;
make your face shine on us,
that we may be saved.

⁵Come, descendants of Jacob,^(A)
let us walk in the light^(B) of the Lord.

The Day of the Lord

⁶You, Lord, have abandoned^(C) your people,
    the descendants of Jacob.^(D)
They are full of superstitions from the East;
    they practice divination^(E) like the Philistines^(F)
    and embrace^(G) pagan customs.^(H)
⁷Their land is full of silver and gold;^(I)
    there is no end to their treasures.^(J)
Their land is full of horses;^(K)
    there is no end to their chariots.^(L)
⁸Their land is full of idols;^(M)
    they bow down^(N) to the work of their hands,^(O)
    to what their fingers^(P) have made.
⁹So people will be brought low^(Q)
    and everyone humbled^(R)—
    do not forgive them.^[a]^(S)

¹⁰Go into the rocks, hide^(T) in the ground
    from the fearful presence of the Lord
    and the splendor of his majesty!^(U)
¹¹The eyes of the arrogant^(V) will be humbled^(W)
    and human pride^(X) brought low;^(Y)
the Lord alone will be exalted^(Z) in that day.^(AA)
