Psalm 71

God’s Help in Old Age

Lord, I seek refuge in you;
let me never be disgraced.(A)
In your justice, rescue and deliver me;
listen closely to me and save me.(B)
Be a rock of refuge for me,
where I can always go.
Give the command to save me,
for you are my rock and fortress.(C)
Deliver me, my God, from the power of the wicked,
from the grasp of the unjust and oppressive.(D)
For you are my hope, Lord God,
my confidence from my youth.(E)
I have leaned on you from birth;
you took me from my mother’s womb.(F)
My praise is always about you.(G)
I am like a miraculous sign to many,
and you are my strong refuge.(H)
My mouth is full of praise
and honor to you all day long.(I)

Don’t discard me in my old age.
As my strength fails, do not abandon me.(J)
10 For my enemies talk about me,
and those who spy on me plot together,(K)
11 saying, “God has abandoned him;
chase him and catch him,
for there is no one to rescue him.”(L)
12 God, do not be far from me;
my God, hurry to help me.(M)
13 May my adversaries be disgraced and destroyed;
may those who intend to harm me
be covered with disgrace and humiliation.(N)
14 But I will hope continually
and will praise you more and more.(O)
15 My mouth will tell about your righteousness
and your salvation all day long,
though I cannot sum them up.(P)
16 I come because of the mighty acts of the Lord God;
I will proclaim your righteousness, yours alone.(Q)

17 God, you have taught me from my youth,
and I still proclaim your wondrous works.(R)
18 Even while I am old and gray,
God, do not abandon me,(S)
while I proclaim your power
to another generation,
your strength to all who are to come.(T)
19 Your righteousness reaches the heights, God,
you who have done great things;
God, who is like you?(U)
20 You caused me to experience
many troubles and misfortunes,(V)
but you will revive me again.(W)
You will bring me up again,
even from the depths of the earth.(X)
21 You will increase my honor
and comfort me once again.(Y)
22 Therefore, I will praise you with a harp
for your faithfulness, my God;
I will sing to you with a lyre,
Holy One of Israel.(Z)
23 My lips will shout for joy
when I sing praise to you
because you have redeemed me.(AA)
24 Therefore, my tongue will proclaim
your righteousness all day long,
for those who intend to harm me
will be disgraced and confounded.(AB)

Psalm 72

A Prayer for the King

Of Solomon.(AC)

God, give your justice to the king
and your righteousness to the king’s son.(AD)
He will judge your people with righteousness
and your afflicted ones with justice.(AE)
May the mountains bring well-being[a] to the people
and the hills, righteousness.(AF)
May he vindicate the afflicted among the people,
help the poor,
and crush the oppressor.(AG)

May they fear you[b] while the sun endures
and as long as the moon, throughout all generations.(AH)
May the king be like rain that falls on the cut grass,
like spring showers that water the earth.(AI)
May the righteous[c] flourish in his days
and well-being abound
until the moon is no more.(AJ)

May he rule from sea to sea
and from the Euphrates
to the ends of the earth.(AK)
May desert tribes kneel before him
and his enemies lick the dust.(AL)
10 May the kings of Tarshish
and the coasts and islands bring tribute,
the kings of Sheba and Seba offer gifts.(AM)
11 Let all kings bow in homage to him,
all nations serve him.(AN)

12 For he will rescue the poor who cry out
and the afflicted who have no helper.(AO)
13 He will have pity on the poor and helpless
and save the lives of the poor.(AP)
14 He will redeem them from oppression and violence,
for their lives are[d] precious[e] in his sight.(AQ)

15 May he live long!
May gold from Sheba be given to him.
May prayer be offered for him continually,
and may he be blessed all day long.(AR)
16 May there be plenty of grain in the land;
may it wave on the tops of the mountains.
May its crops be like Lebanon.
May people flourish in the cities
like the grass of the field.(AS)
17 May his name endure forever;
as long as the sun shines,
may his fame increase.
May all nations be blessed by him
and call him blessed.(AT)

18 Blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel,
who alone does wonders.(AU)
19 Blessed be his glorious name forever;
the whole earth is filled with his glory.(AV)
Amen and amen.
20 The prayers of David son of Jesse are concluded.(AW)

BOOK III

(Psalms 73–89)

Psalm 73

God’s Ways Vindicated

A psalm of Asaph.(AX)

God is indeed good to Israel,
to the pure in heart.(AY)
But as for me, my feet almost slipped;
my steps nearly went astray.(AZ)
For I envied the arrogant;
I saw the prosperity of the wicked.(BA)

They have an easy time until they die,[f]
and their bodies are well fed.[g](BB)
They are not in trouble like others;
they are not afflicted like most people.(BC)
Therefore, pride is their necklace,
and violence covers them like a garment.(BD)
Their eyes bulge out from fatness;
the imaginations of their hearts run wild.(BE)
They mock, and they speak maliciously;
they arrogantly threaten oppression.(BF)
They set their mouths against heaven,
and their tongues strut across the earth.(BG)
10 Therefore his people turn to them[h]
and drink in their overflowing words.[i](BH)
11 The wicked say, “How can God know?
Does the Most High know everything?” (BI)
12 Look at them—the wicked!
They are always at ease,
and they increase their wealth.(BJ)

13 Did I purify my heart
and wash my hands in innocence for nothing?(BK)
14 For I am afflicted all day long
and punished every morning.(BL)
15 If I had decided to say these things aloud,
I would have betrayed your people.[j](BM)
16 When I tried to understand all this,
it seemed hopeless[k](BN)
17 until I entered God’s sanctuary.
Then I understood their destiny.(BO)
18 Indeed, you put them in slippery places;
you make them fall into ruin.(BP)
19 How suddenly they become a desolation!
They come to an end, swept away by terrors.(BQ)
20 Like one waking from a dream,
Lord, when arising, you will despise their image.(BR)

21 When I became embittered
and my innermost being[l] was wounded,(BS)
22 I was stupid and didn’t understand;
I was an unthinking animal toward you.(BT)
23 Yet I am always with you;
you hold my right hand.(BU)
24 You guide me with your counsel,
and afterward you will take me up in glory.[m](BV)
25 Who do I have in heaven but you?
And I desire nothing on earth but you.(BW)
26 My flesh and my heart may fail,
but God is the strength[n] of my heart,
my portion forever.(BX)
27 Those far from you will certainly perish;
you destroy all who are unfaithful to you.(BY)
28 But as for me, God’s presence is my good.
I have made the Lord God my refuge,
so I can tell about all you do.(BZ)

Psalm 74

Prayer for Israel

A Maskil of Asaph.(CA)

Why have you rejected us forever, God?
Why does your anger burn
against the sheep of your pasture?(CB)
Remember your congregation,
which you purchased long ago
and redeemed as the tribe for your own possession.(CC)
Remember Mount Zion where you dwell.(CD)
Make your way[o] to the perpetual ruins,
to all that the enemy has destroyed in the sanctuary.(CE)
Your adversaries roared in the meeting place
where you met with us.[p]
They set up their emblems as signs.(CF)
It was like men in a thicket of trees,
wielding axes,(CG)
then smashing all the carvings
with hatchets and picks.(CH)
They set your sanctuary on fire;
they utterly[q] desecrated
the dwelling place of your name.(CI)
They said in their hearts,
“Let’s oppress them relentlessly.”
They burned every place throughout the land
where God met with us.[r](CJ)
There are no signs for us to see.
There is no longer a prophet.
And none of us knows how long this will last.(CK)
10 God, how long will the enemy mock?
Will the foe insult your name forever?(CL)
11 Why do you hold back your hand?
Stretch out[s] your right hand and destroy them!(CM)

12 God my King is from ancient times,
performing saving acts on the earth.(CN)
13 You divided the sea with your strength;
you smashed the heads of the sea monsters in the water;(CO)
14 you crushed the heads of Leviathan;
you fed him to the creatures of the desert. (CP)
15 You opened up springs and streams;(CQ)
you dried up ever-flowing rivers.(CR)
16 The day is yours, also the night;
you established the moon and the sun.(CS)
17 You set all the boundaries of the earth;
you made summer and winter.(CT)

18 Remember this: the enemy has mocked the Lord,
and a foolish people has insulted your name.(CU)
19 Do not give to beasts the life of your dove;[t]
do not forget the lives of your poor people forever.(CV)
20 Consider the covenant,(CW)
for the dark places of the land are full of violence.(CX)
21 Do not let the oppressed turn away in shame;
let the poor and needy praise your name.(CY)
22 Rise up, God, champion your cause!(CZ)
Remember the insults
that fools bring against you all day long.(DA)
23 Do not forget the clamor of your adversaries,
the tumult of your opponents that goes up constantly.(DB)

Psalm 75

God Judges the Wicked

For the choir director: “Do Not Destroy.” A psalm of Asaph.(DC) A song.

We give thanks to you, God;
we give thanks to you, for your name is near.(DD)
People tell about your wondrous works.(DE)

“When I choose a time,
I will judge fairly.(DF)
When the earth and all its inhabitants shake,
I am the one who steadies its pillars.(DG)Selah
I say to the boastful, ‘Do not boast,’
and to the wicked, ‘Do not lift up your horn.(DH)
Do not lift up your horn against heaven[u]
or speak arrogantly.’”(DI)

Exaltation does not come
from the east, the west, or the desert,
for God is the Judge:
He brings down one and exalts another.(DJ)
For there is a cup in the Lord’s hand,
full of wine blended with spices, and he pours from it.
All the wicked of the earth will drink,
draining it to the dregs.(DK)

As for me, I will tell about him forever;
I will sing praise to the God of Jacob.(DL)

10 “I will cut off all the horns of the wicked,(DM)
but the horns of the righteous will be lifted up.”(DN)

BOOK III

Psalms 73–89

Psalm 73

A psalm of Asaph.

Surely God is good to Israel,
    to those who are pure in heart.(CM)

But as for me, my feet had almost slipped;(CN)
    I had nearly lost my foothold.(CO)
For I envied(CP) the arrogant
    when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.(CQ)

They have no struggles;
    their bodies are healthy and strong.[e]
They are free(CR) from common human burdens;
    they are not plagued by human ills.
Therefore pride(CS) is their necklace;(CT)
    they clothe themselves with violence.(CU)
From their callous hearts(CV) comes iniquity[f];
    their evil imaginations have no limits.
They scoff, and speak with malice;(CW)
    with arrogance(CX) they threaten oppression.(CY)
Their mouths lay claim to heaven,
    and their tongues take possession of the earth.
10 Therefore their people turn to them
    and drink up waters in abundance.[g]
11 They say, “How would God know?
    Does the Most High know anything?”

12 This is what the wicked are like—
    always free of care,(CZ) they go on amassing wealth.(DA)

13 Surely in vain(DB) I have kept my heart pure
    and have washed my hands in innocence.(DC)
14 All day long I have been afflicted,(DD)
    and every morning brings new punishments.

15 If I had spoken out like that,
    I would have betrayed your children.
16 When I tried to understand(DE) all this,
    it troubled me deeply
17 till I entered the sanctuary(DF) of God;
    then I understood their final destiny.(DG)

18 Surely you place them on slippery ground;(DH)
    you cast them down to ruin.(DI)
19 How suddenly(DJ) are they destroyed,
    completely swept away(DK) by terrors!
20 They are like a dream(DL) when one awakes;(DM)
    when you arise, Lord,
    you will despise them as fantasies.(DN)

21 When my heart was grieved
    and my spirit embittered,
22 I was senseless(DO) and ignorant;
    I was a brute beast(DP) before you.

23 Yet I am always with you;
    you hold me by my right hand.(DQ)
24 You guide(DR) me with your counsel,(DS)
    and afterward you will take me into glory.
25 Whom have I in heaven but you?(DT)
    And earth has nothing I desire besides you.(DU)
26 My flesh and my heart(DV) may fail,(DW)
    but God is the strength(DX) of my heart
    and my portion(DY) forever.

27 Those who are far from you will perish;(DZ)
    you destroy all who are unfaithful(EA) to you.
28 But as for me, it is good to be near God.(EB)
    I have made the Sovereign Lord my refuge;(EC)
    I will tell of all your deeds.(ED)

Psalm 74

A maskil[h] of Asaph.

O God, why have you rejected(EE) us forever?(EF)
    Why does your anger smolder against the sheep of your pasture?(EG)
Remember the nation you purchased(EH) long ago,(EI)
    the people of your inheritance,(EJ) whom you redeemed(EK)
    Mount Zion,(EL) where you dwelt.(EM)
Turn your steps toward these everlasting ruins,(EN)
    all this destruction the enemy has brought on the sanctuary.

Your foes roared(EO) in the place where you met with us;
    they set up their standards(EP) as signs.
They behaved like men wielding axes
    to cut through a thicket of trees.(EQ)
They smashed all the carved(ER) paneling
    with their axes and hatchets.
They burned your sanctuary to the ground;
    they defiled(ES) the dwelling place(ET) of your Name.(EU)
They said in their hearts, “We will crush(EV) them completely!”
    They burned(EW) every place where God was worshiped in the land.

We are given no signs from God;(EX)
    no prophets(EY) are left,
    and none of us knows how long this will be.
10 How long(EZ) will the enemy mock(FA) you, God?
    Will the foe revile(FB) your name forever?
11 Why do you hold back your hand, your right hand?(FC)
    Take it from the folds of your garment(FD) and destroy them!

12 But God is my King(FE) from long ago;
    he brings salvation(FF) on the earth.

13 It was you who split open the sea(FG) by your power;
    you broke the heads of the monster(FH) in the waters.
14 It was you who crushed the heads of Leviathan(FI)
    and gave it as food to the creatures of the desert.(FJ)
15 It was you who opened up springs(FK) and streams;
    you dried up(FL) the ever-flowing rivers.
16 The day is yours, and yours also the night;
    you established the sun and moon.(FM)
17 It was you who set all the boundaries(FN) of the earth;
    you made both summer and winter.(FO)

18 Remember how the enemy has mocked you, Lord,
    how foolish people(FP) have reviled your name.
19 Do not hand over the life of your dove(FQ) to wild beasts;
    do not forget the lives of your afflicted(FR) people forever.
20 Have regard for your covenant,(FS)
    because haunts of violence fill the dark places(FT) of the land.
21 Do not let the oppressed(FU) retreat in disgrace;
    may the poor and needy(FV) praise your name.
22 Rise up,(FW) O God, and defend your cause;
    remember how fools(FX) mock you all day long.
23 Do not ignore the clamor(FY) of your adversaries,(FZ)
    the uproar(GA) of your enemies,(GB) which rises continually.

Psalm 75[i]

For the director of music. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.” A psalm of Asaph. A song.

We praise you, God,

    people tell of your wonderful deeds.(GD)

You say, “I choose the appointed time;(GE)
    it is I who judge with equity.(GF)
When the earth and all its people quake,(GG)
    it is I who hold its pillars(GH) firm.[j]
To the arrogant(GI) I say, ‘Boast no more,’(GJ)
    and to the wicked, ‘Do not lift up your horns.[k](GK)
Do not lift your horns against heaven;
    do not speak so defiantly.(GL)’”

No one from the east or the west
    or from the desert can exalt themselves.
It is God who judges:(GM)
    He brings one down, he exalts another.(GN)
In the hand of the Lord is a cup
    full of foaming wine mixed(GO) with spices;
he pours it out, and all the wicked of the earth
    drink it down to its very dregs.(GP)

As for me, I will declare(GQ) this forever;
    I will sing(GR) praise to the God of Jacob,(GS)
10 who says, “I will cut off the horns of all the wicked,
