The Steadfast Love of the Lord

33 (A)Shout for joy in the Lord, O you righteous!
    (B)Praise befits the upright.
Give thanks to the Lord with the (C)lyre;
    make melody to him with (D)the harp of (E)ten strings!
Sing to him (F)a new song;
    play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts.

For the word of the Lord is upright,
    and all his work is done in (G)faithfulness.
He (H)loves righteousness and justice;
    (I)the earth is full of the steadfast love of the Lord.

By (J)the word of the Lord the heavens were made,
    and by (K)the breath of his mouth all (L)their host.
He gathers the waters of the sea as (M)a heap;
    he (N)puts the deeps in storehouses.

Let all the earth fear the Lord;
    let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him!
For (O)he spoke, and it came to be;
    he commanded, and it stood firm.

10 The Lord (P)brings the counsel of the nations to nothing;
    he frustrates the plans of the peoples.
11 (Q)The counsel of the Lord stands forever,
    the plans of his heart to all generations.
12 (R)Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,
    the people whom he has (S)chosen as his heritage!

13 The Lord (T)looks down from heaven;
    he sees all the children of man;
14 from (U)where he sits enthroned he (V)looks out
    on all the inhabitants of the earth,
15 he who fashions the hearts of them all
    and observes all their deeds.
16 (W)The king is not saved by his great army;
    a warrior is not delivered by his great strength.
17 (X)The war horse is a false hope for salvation,
    and by its great might it cannot rescue.

18 Behold, (Y)the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him,
    (Z)on those who hope in his steadfast love,
19 that he may (AA)deliver their soul from death
    and keep them alive in (AB)famine.

20 Our soul (AC)waits for the Lord;
    he is our (AD)help and (AE)our shield.
21 For our heart is (AF)glad in him,
    because we (AG)trust in his holy name.
22 Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us,
    even as we hope in you.

Taste and See That the Lord Is Good

[a] Of David, when he (AH)changed his behavior before (AI)Abimelech, so that he drove him out, and he went away.

34 I will bless the Lord (AJ)at all times;
    his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
My soul (AK)makes its boast in the Lord;
    let the humble hear and (AL)be glad.
Oh, (AM)magnify the Lord with me,
    and let us exalt his name together!

I (AN)sought the Lord, and he answered me
    and delivered me from all my fears.
Those who look to him are (AO)radiant,
    and their faces shall never be ashamed.
(AP)This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him
    and (AQ)saved him out of all his troubles.
(AR)The angel of the Lord (AS)encamps
    around those who fear him, and delivers them.

Oh, (AT)taste and see that (AU)the Lord is good!
    (AV)Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!
Oh, fear the Lord, you his saints,
    for those who fear him have no lack!
10 (AW)The young lions suffer want and hunger;
    but those who (AX)seek the Lord lack no good thing.

11 (AY)Come, O children, listen to me;
    (AZ)I will teach you the fear of the Lord.
12 (BA)What man is there who desires life
    and loves many days, that he may (BB)see good?
13 (BC)Keep your tongue from evil
    and your lips from (BD)speaking deceit.
14 (BE)Turn away from evil and do good;
    seek peace and (BF)pursue it.

15 (BG)The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous
    (BH)and his ears toward their cry.
16 (BI)The face of the Lord is against those who do evil,
    to (BJ)cut off the memory of them from the earth.
17 (BK)When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears
    and delivers them out of all their troubles.
18 The Lord is near to (BL)the brokenhearted
    and saves (BM)the crushed in spirit.

19 (BN)Many are the afflictions of the righteous,
    (BO)but the Lord delivers him out of them all.
20 He keeps all his bones;
    (BP)not one of them is broken.
21 (BQ)Affliction will slay the wicked,
    and those who hate the righteous will be condemned.
22 The Lord (BR)redeems the life of his servants;
    none of those who take refuge in him will be (BS)condemned.

Great Is the Lord

Of David.

35 Contend, O Lord, with those who (BT)contend with me;
    (BU)fight against those who fight against me!
Take hold of (BV)shield and buckler
    and rise for my help!
Draw the spear and javelin[b]
    against my pursuers!
Say to my soul,
    “I am your salvation!”

(BW)Let them be (BX)put to shame and dishonor
    who seek after my life!
Let them be (BY)turned back and disappointed
    who devise evil against me!
Let them be like (BZ)chaff before the wind,
    with the angel of the Lord driving them away!
Let their way be dark and (CA)slippery,
    with the angel of the Lord pursuing them!

For (CB)without cause (CC)they hid their net for me;
    without cause they dug (CD)a pit for my life.[c]
Let (CE)destruction come upon him (CF)when he does not know it!
And let the net that he hid ensnare him;
    let him fall into it—to his destruction!

Then my soul will rejoice in the Lord,
    (CG)exulting in his salvation.
10 All my (CH)bones shall say,
    “O Lord, (CI)who is like you,
delivering the poor
    from him who is too strong for him,
    the poor and needy from him who robs him?”

11 (CJ)Malicious[d] witnesses rise up;
    they ask me of things that I do not know.
12 (CK)They repay me evil for good;
    my soul is bereft.[e]
13 But I, (CL)when they were sick—
    I (CM)wore sackcloth;
    I (CN)afflicted myself with fasting;
I prayed (CO)with head bowed[f] on my chest.
14     I went about as though I grieved for my friend or my brother;
as one who laments his mother,
    I (CP)bowed down in mourning.

15 But at my stumbling they rejoiced and gathered;
    they gathered together against me;
(CQ)wretches whom I did not know
    tore at me without ceasing;
16 like profane mockers at a feast,[g]
    they (CR)gnash at me with their teeth.

17 How long, O Lord, will you (CS)look on?
    Rescue me from their destruction,
    (CT)my precious life from the lions!
18 I will thank you in (CU)the great congregation;
    in the mighty throng I will praise you.

19 (CV)Let not those rejoice over me
    who are (CW)wrongfully my foes,
and let not those (CX)wink the eye
    who (CY)hate me (CZ)without cause.
20 For they do not speak peace,
    but against those who are quiet in the land
    they devise words of deceit.
21 They (DA)open wide their mouths against me;
    they say, (DB)“Aha, Aha!
    Our eyes have seen it!”

22 (DC)You have seen, O Lord; (DD)be not silent!
    O Lord, (DE)be not far from me!
23 Awake and (DF)rouse yourself for (DG)my vindication,
    for my cause, my God and my Lord!
24 (DH)Vindicate me, O Lord, my God,
    according to your righteousness,
    and (DI)let them not rejoice over me!
25 Let them not say in their hearts,
    (DJ)“Aha, our heart's desire!”
Let them not say, (DK)“We have swallowed him up.”

26 Let them be (DL)put to shame and disappointed altogether
    who rejoice at my calamity!
Let them be (DM)clothed with shame and dishonor
    who (DN)magnify themselves against me!

27 Let those who delight in my righteousness
    shout for joy and be glad
    (DO)and say evermore,
(DP)“Great is the Lord,
    who (DQ)delights in the welfare of his servant!”
28 Then my (DR)tongue shall tell of your righteousness
    and of your praise all the day long.

How Precious Is Your Steadfast Love

To the choirmaster. Of David, the (DS)servant of the Lord.

36 Transgression speaks to the wicked
    deep in his heart;[h]
(DT)there is no fear of God
    before his eyes.
(DU)For he flatters himself in his own eyes
    that his iniquity cannot be found out and hated.
The words of his mouth are (DV)trouble and deceit;
    (DW)he has ceased to act wisely and do good.
He (DX)plots (DY)trouble while on his bed;
    he sets himself in (DZ)a way that is not good;
    (EA)he does not reject evil.

Your steadfast love, O Lord, extends to the heavens,
    your faithfulness to the clouds.
(EB)Your righteousness is like the mountains of God;
    (EC)your judgments are like the great deep;
    man and beast you (ED)save, O Lord.

(EE)How precious is your steadfast love, O God!
    The children of mankind take refuge (EF)in the shadow of your wings.
They feast on (EG)the abundance of your house,
    and you give them drink from (EH)the river of (EI)your delights.
For with you is (EJ)the fountain of life;
    (EK)in your light do we see light.

10 Oh, continue your steadfast love to those who (EL)know you,
    and your righteousness to (EM)the upright of heart!
11 Let not the foot of arrogance come upon me,
    nor the hand of the wicked drive me away.
12 There (EN)the evildoers lie fallen;
    they are thrust down, (EO)unable to rise.

He Will Not Forsake His Saints

[i] Of David.

37 (EP)Fret not yourself because of evildoers;
    be not (EQ)envious of wrongdoers!
For they will soon (ER)fade like (ES)the grass
    and wither (ET)like the green herb.

(EU)Trust in the Lord, and do good;
    (EV)dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.[j]
(EW)Delight yourself in the Lord,
    and he will (EX)give you the desires of your heart.

(EY)Commit your way to the Lord;
    (EZ)trust in him, and he will act.
(FA)He will bring forth your righteousness as the light,
    and your justice as (FB)the noonday.

(FC)Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him;
    (FD)fret not yourself over the one who (FE)prospers in his way,
    over the man who carries out evil devices!

(FF)Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath!
    (FG)Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil.
(FH)For the evildoers shall be cut off,
    but those who wait for the Lord shall (FI)inherit the land.

10 In (FJ)just a little while, the wicked will be no more;
    though you look carefully at (FK)his place, he will not be there.
11 But (FL)the meek shall inherit the land
    and delight themselves in (FM)abundant peace.

12 The wicked (FN)plots against the righteous
    and (FO)gnashes his teeth at him,
13 but the Lord (FP)laughs at the wicked,
    for he sees that his (FQ)day is coming.

14 The wicked draw the sword and (FR)bend their bows
    to bring down the poor and needy,
    to slay those whose (FS)way is upright;
15 their sword shall enter their own heart,
    and their (FT)bows shall be broken.

16 (FU)Better is the little that the righteous has
    than the abundance of many wicked.
17 For (FV)the arms of the wicked shall be broken,
    but the Lord (FW)upholds the righteous.

18 The Lord (FX)knows the days of the blameless,
    and their (FY)heritage will remain forever;
19 they are not put to shame in evil times;
    in (FZ)the days of famine they have abundance.

20 But the wicked will perish;
    the enemies of the Lord are like (GA)the glory of the pastures;
    they vanish—like (GB)smoke they vanish away.

21 The wicked borrows but does not pay back,
    but the righteous (GC)is generous and gives;
22 for those blessed by the Lord[k] shall (GD)inherit the land,
    but those cursed by him (GE)shall be cut off.

23 The (GF)steps of a man are (GG)established by the Lord,
    when he delights in his way;
24 (GH)though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong,
    for the Lord (GI)upholds his hand.

25 I have been young, and now am old,
    yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken
    or his children (GJ)begging for bread.
26 He is ever (GK)lending generously,
    and his children become a blessing.

27 (GL)Turn away from evil and do good;
    so shall you (GM)dwell forever.
28 For the Lord (GN)loves justice;
    he will not forsake his (GO)saints.
They are preserved forever,
    but the children of the wicked shall be (GP)cut off.
29 The righteous shall inherit the land
    and (GQ)dwell upon it forever.

30 The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom,
    and his tongue speaks justice.
31 (GR)The law of his God is in his heart;
    his (GS)steps do not slip.

32 The wicked (GT)watches for the righteous
    and seeks to put him to death.
33 The Lord will not (GU)abandon him to his power
    or let him (GV)be condemned when he is brought to trial.

34 (GW)Wait for the Lord and keep his way,
    and he will exalt you to inherit the land;
    you will look on (GX)when the wicked are cut off.

35 (GY)I have seen a wicked, ruthless man,
    spreading himself like (GZ)a green laurel tree.[l]
36 But he passed away,[m] and behold, (HA)he was no more;
    though I sought him, he could not be found.

37 Mark the blameless and behold the upright,
    for there is a future for the man of (HB)peace.
38 But (HC)transgressors shall be altogether destroyed;
    the future of the wicked (HD)shall be cut off.

39 (HE)The salvation of the righteous is from the Lord;
    he is their stronghold in (HF)the time of trouble.
40 The Lord helps them and (HG)delivers them;
    (HH)he delivers them from the wicked and saves them,
    because they (HI)take refuge in him.

Psalm 35

Of David.

Contend,(CH) Lord, with those who contend with me;
    fight(CI) against those who fight against me.
Take up shield(CJ) and armor;
    arise(CK) and come to my aid.(CL)
Brandish spear(CM) and javelin[d](CN)
    against those who pursue me.
Say to me,
    “I am your salvation.(CO)

May those who seek my life(CP)

May they be like chaff(CT) before the wind,

Since they hid their net(CV) for me without cause(CW)

    “Who is like you,(DC) Lord?
You rescue the poor from those too strong(DD) for them,

11 Ruthless witnesses(DF) come forward;
    they question me on things I know nothing about.

    and leave me like one bereaved.
13 Yet when they were ill, I put on sackcloth(DH)
    and humbled myself with fasting.(DI)

    your praises all day long.(ER)

Psalm 36[f]

For the director of music. Of David the servant of the Lord.

I have a message from God in my heart
    concerning the sinfulness of the wicked:[g](ES)
There is no fear(ET) of God
    before their eyes.(EU)

In their own eyes they flatter themselves
    too much to detect or hate their sin.(EV)
The words of their mouths(EW) are wicked and deceitful;(EX)
    they fail to act wisely(EY) or do good.(EZ)
Even on their beds they plot evil;(FA)
    they commit themselves to a sinful course(FB)
    and do not reject what is wrong.(FC)

Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens,
    your faithfulness(FD) to the skies.(FE)
Your righteousness(FF) is like the highest mountains,(FG)
    your justice like the great deep.(FH)
    You, Lord, preserve both people and animals.(FI)
How priceless is your unfailing love, O God!(FJ)
    People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.(FK)
They feast on the abundance of your house;(FL)
    you give them drink from your river(FM) of delights.(FN)
For with you is the fountain of life;(FO)
    in your light(FP) we see light.

10 Continue your love(FQ) to those who know you,(FR)
    your righteousness to the upright in heart.(FS)
11 May the foot of the proud not come against me,
    nor the hand of the wicked(FT) drive me away.
12 See how the evildoers lie fallen—
    thrown down, not able to rise!(FU)

Psalm 37[h]

Of David.

Do not fret because of those who are evil
    or be envious(FV) of those who do wrong;(FW)
for like the grass they will soon wither,(FX)
    like green plants they will soon die away.(FY)

Trust in the Lord and do good;
    dwell in the land(FZ) and enjoy safe pasture.(GA)
Take delight(GB) in the Lord,
    and he will give you the desires of your heart.(GC)

Commit your way to the Lord;
    trust in him(GD) and he will do this:
He will make your righteous reward(GE) shine like the dawn,(GF)
    your vindication like the noonday sun.

Be still(GG) before the Lord
    and wait patiently(GH) for him;
do not fret(GI) when people succeed in their ways,(GJ)
    when they carry out their wicked schemes.(GK)

Refrain from anger(GL) and turn from wrath;
    do not fret(GM)—it leads only to evil.
For those who are evil will be destroyed,(GN)
    but those who hope(GO) in the Lord will inherit the land.(GP)

10 A little while, and the wicked will be no more;(GQ)
    though you look for them, they will not be found.
11 But the meek will inherit the land(GR)
    and enjoy peace and prosperity.(GS)

12 The wicked plot(GT) against the righteous
    and gnash their teeth(GU) at them;
13 but the Lord laughs at the wicked,
    for he knows their day is coming.(GV)

14 The wicked draw the sword(GW)
    and bend the bow(GX)
to bring down the poor and needy,(GY)
    to slay those whose ways are upright.
