Psalm 30

Psalm 30^[a]

A psalm. A song. For the dedication of the temple.^[b] Of David.

¹I will exalt^(A) you, Lord,
    for you lifted me out of the depths^(B)
    and did not let my enemies gloat over me.^(C)
²Lord my God, I called to you for help,^(D)
    and you healed me.^(E)
³You, Lord, brought me up from the realm of the dead;^(F)
    you spared me from going down to the pit.^(G)

⁴Sing^(H) the praises of the Lord, you his faithful people;^(I)
    praise his holy name.^(J)
⁵For his anger^(K) lasts only a moment,^(L)
    but his favor lasts a lifetime;^(M)
weeping^(N) may stay for the night,
    but rejoicing comes in the morning.^(O)

⁶When I felt secure, I said,
    “I will never be shaken.”^(P)
⁷Lord, when you favored me,
    you made my royal mountain^[c] stand firm;
but when you hid your face,^(Q)
    I was dismayed.

⁸To you, Lord, I called;
    to the Lord I cried for mercy:
⁹“What is gained if I am silenced,
    if I go down to the pit?^(R)
Will the dust praise you?
    Will it proclaim your faithfulness?^(S)
¹⁰Hear,^(T) Lord, and be merciful to me;^(U)
    Lord, be my help.^(V)”

¹¹You turned my wailing^(W) into dancing;^(X)
you removed my sackcloth^(Y) and clothed me with joy,^(Z)
¹²that my heart may sing your praises and not be silent.
Lord my God, I will praise^(AA) you forever.^(AB)

    cry out to the Lord.^(A)
You walls of Daughter Zion,^(B)
    let your tears^(C) flow like a river

give yourself no relief,
    your eyes no rest.^(E)

¹⁹Arise, cry out in the night,
    as the watches of the night begin;
pour out your heart^(F) like water
    in the presence of the Lord.^(G)
Lift up your hands^(H) to him
    for the lives of your children,
who faint^(I) from hunger
    at every street corner.

²⁰“Look, Lord, and consider:
    Whom have you ever treated like this?
Should women eat their offspring,^(J)
    the children they have cared for?^(K)
Should priest and prophet be killed^(L)
    in the sanctuary of the Lord?^(M)

²¹“Young and old lie together
    in the dust of the streets;
my young men and young women
    have fallen by the sword.^(N)
You have slain them in the day of your anger;
    you have slaughtered them without pity.^(O)

²²“As you summon to a feast day,
    so you summoned against me terrors^(P) on every side.
In the day of the Lord’s anger
    no one escaped^(Q) or survived;
those I cared for and reared^(R)
    my enemy has destroyed.”

Jesus Drives Out an Impure Spirit^(A)

³¹Then he went down to Capernaum,^(B) a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he taught the people. ³²They were amazed at his teaching,^(C) because his words had authority.^(D)

³³In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an impure spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice, ³⁴“Go away! What do you want with us,^(E) Jesus of Nazareth?^(F) Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are^(G)—the Holy One of God!”^(H)

³⁵“Be quiet!” Jesus said sternly.^(I) “Come out of him!” Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him.

³⁶All the people were amazed^(J) and said to each other, “What words these are! With authority^(K) and power he gives orders to impure spirits and they come out!” ³⁷And the news about him spread throughout the surrounding area.^(L)
