Psalm 29

New International Version

Psalm 29

A psalm of David.

¹Ascribe to the Lord,^(A) you heavenly beings,^(B)
ascribe to the Lord glory^(C) and strength.
²Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
worship the Lord in the splendor of his^[a] holiness.^(D)

³The voice^(E) of the Lord is over the waters;
    the God of glory^(F) thunders,^(G)
    the Lord thunders over the mighty waters.^(H)
⁴The voice of the Lord is powerful;^(I)
    the voice of the Lord is majestic.
⁵The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
    the Lord breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon.^(J)
⁶He makes Lebanon leap^(K) like a calf,
    Sirion^[b]^(L) like a young wild ox.^(M)
⁷The voice of the Lord strikes
    with flashes of lightning.^(N)
⁸The voice of the Lord shakes the desert;
    the Lord shakes the Desert of Kadesh.^(O)
⁹The voice of the Lord twists the oaks^[c]^(P)
    and strips the forests bare.
And in his temple all cry, “Glory!”^(Q)

¹⁰The Lord sits enthroned over the flood;^(R)
the Lord is enthroned as King forever.^(S)
¹¹The Lord gives strength to his people;^(T)
the Lord blesses his people with peace.^(U)

1 The vision^(A) concerning Judah and Jerusalem^(B) that Isaiah son of Amoz saw^(C) during the reigns of Uzziah,^(D) Jotham,^(E) Ahaz^(F) and Hezekiah,^(G) kings of Judah.

A Rebellious Nation

²Hear me, you heavens! Listen, earth!^(H)
    For the Lord has spoken:^(I)
“I reared children^(J) and brought them up,
    but they have rebelled^(K) against me.
³The ox knows^(L) its master,
    the donkey its owner’s manger,^(M)
but Israel does not know,^(N)
    my people do not understand.^(O)”

⁴Woe to the sinful nation,
    a people whose guilt is great,^(P)
a brood of evildoers,^(Q)
    children given to corruption!^(R)
They have forsaken^(S) the Lord;
    they have spurned the Holy One^(T) of Israel
    and turned their backs^(U) on him.

Isaiah 1:16-20

¹⁶Wash^(A) and make yourselves clean.
    Take your evil deeds out of my sight;^(B)
    stop doing wrong.^(C)
¹⁷Learn to do right;^(D) seek justice.^(E)
    Defend the oppressed.^[a]^(F)
Take up the cause of the fatherless;^(G)
    plead the case of the widow.^(H)

¹⁸“Come now, let us settle the matter,”^(I)
    says the Lord.
“Though your sins are like scarlet,
    they shall be as white as snow;^(J)
though they are red as crimson,
    they shall be like wool.^(K)
¹⁹If you are willing and obedient,^(L)
    you will eat the good things of the land;^(M)
²⁰but if you resist and rebel,^(N)
    you will be devoured by the sword.”^(O)
For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.^(P)

Romans 8:1-8

Life Through the Spirit

8 Therefore, there is now no condemnation^(A) for those who are in Christ Jesus,^(B) ²because through Christ Jesus^(C) the law of the Spirit who gives life^(D) has set you^[a] free^(E) from the law of sin^(F) and death. ³For what the law was powerless^(G) to do because it was weakened by the flesh,^[b]^(H) God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh^(I) to be a sin offering.^[c]^(J) And so he condemned sin in the flesh, ⁴in order that the righteous requirement^(K) of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.^(L)

⁵Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires;^(M) but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.^(N) ⁶The mind governed by the flesh is death,^(O) but the mind governed by the Spirit is life^(P) and peace. ⁷The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God;^(Q) it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. ⁸Those who are in the realm of the flesh^(R) cannot please God.
