Psalm 14

New International Version

Psalm 14^(A)

For the director of music. Of David.

¹The fool^[a] says in his heart,
“There is no God.”^(B)
They are corrupt, their deeds are vile;
there is no one who does good.

²The Lord looks down from heaven^(C)
    on all mankind
to see if there are any who understand,^(D)
    any who seek God.^(E)
³All have turned away,^(F) all have become corrupt;^(G)
    there is no one who does good,^(H)
    not even one.^(I)

⁴Do all these evildoers know nothing?^(J)

They devour my people^(K) as though eating bread;
    they never call on the Lord.^(L)
⁵But there they are, overwhelmed with dread,
    for God is present in the company of the righteous.
⁶You evildoers frustrate the plans of the poor,
    but the Lord is their refuge.^(M)

⁷Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion!^(N)
When the Lord restores^(O) his people,
let Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad!

David Defeats the Ammonites^(A)

10 In the course of time, the king of the Ammonites died, and his son Hanun succeeded him as king. ²David thought, “I will show kindness to Hanun son of Nahash,^(B) just as his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent a delegation to express his sympathy to Hanun concerning his father.

When David’s men came to the land of the Ammonites, ³the Ammonite commanders said to Hanun their lord, “Do you think David is honoring your father by sending envoys to you to express sympathy? Hasn’t David sent them to you only to explore the city and spy it out^(C) and overthrow it?” ⁴So Hanun seized David’s envoys, shaved off half of each man’s beard,^(D) cut off their garments at the buttocks,^(E) and sent them away.

⁵When David was told about this, he sent messengers to meet the men, for they were greatly humiliated. The king said, “Stay at Jericho till your beards have grown, and then come back.”

Colossians 1:9-14

⁹For this reason, since the day we heard about you,^(A) we have not stopped praying for you.^(B) We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will^(C) through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives,^[a]^(D) ¹⁰so that you may live a life worthy^(E) of the Lord and please him^(F) in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God,^(G) ¹¹being strengthened with all power^(H) according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience,^(I) ¹²and giving joyful thanks to the Father,^(J) who has qualified you^[b] to share in the inheritance^(K) of his holy people in the kingdom of light.^(L) ¹³For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness^(M) and brought us into the kingdom^(N) of the Son he loves,^(O) ¹⁴in whom we have redemption,^(P) the forgiveness of sins.^(Q)
