Psalm 139

For the director of music. Of David. A psalm.

¹You have searched me,^(A) Lord,
    and you know^(B) me.
²You know when I sit and when I rise;^(C)
    you perceive my thoughts^(D) from afar.
³You discern my going out^(E) and my lying down;
    you are familiar with all my ways.^(F)
⁴Before a word is on my tongue
    you, Lord, know it completely.^(G)
⁵You hem me in^(H) behind and before,
    and you lay your hand upon me.
⁶Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,^(I)
    too lofty^(J) for me to attain.

¹³For you created my inmost being;^(A)
    you knit me together^(B) in my mother’s womb.^(C)
¹⁴I praise you^(D) because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
    your works are wonderful,^(E)
    I know that full well.
¹⁵My frame was not hidden from you
    when I was made^(F) in the secret place,
    when I was woven together^(G) in the depths of the earth.^(H)
¹⁶Your eyes saw my unformed body;
    all the days ordained^(I) for me were written in your book
    before one of them came to be.
¹⁷How precious to me are your thoughts,^[a]^(J) God!^(K)
    How vast is the sum of them!
¹⁸Were I to count them,^(L)
    they would outnumber the grains of sand^(M)—
    when I awake,^(N) I am still with you.

¹⁴“However, the days are coming,”^(A) declares the Lord, “when it will no longer be said, ‘As surely as the Lord lives, who brought the Israelites up out of Egypt,’^(B) ¹⁵but it will be said, ‘As surely as the Lord lives, who brought the Israelites up out of the land of the north^(C) and out of all the countries where he had banished them.’^(D) For I will restore^(E) them to the land I gave their ancestors.^(F)

¹⁶“But now I will send for many fishermen,” declares the Lord, “and they will catch them.^(G) After that I will send for many hunters, and they will hunt^(H) them down on every mountain and hill and from the crevices of the rocks.^(I) ¹⁷My eyes are on all their ways; they are not hidden^(J) from me, nor is their sin concealed from my eyes.^(K) ¹⁸I will repay^(L) them double^(M) for their wickedness and their sin, because they have defiled my land^(N) with the lifeless forms of their vile images^(O) and have filled my inheritance with their detestable idols.^(P)”^(Q)

¹⁹Lord, my strength and my fortress,
    my refuge^(R) in time of distress,
to you the nations will come^(S)
    from the ends of the earth and say,
“Our ancestors possessed nothing but false gods,^(T)
    worthless idols^(U) that did them no good.^(V)
²⁰Do people make their own gods?
    Yes, but they are not gods!”^(W)

²¹“Therefore I will teach them—
    this time I will teach them
    my power and might.
Then they will know
    that my name^(X) is the Lord.

17 “Judah’s sin is engraved with an iron tool,^(Y)
    inscribed with a flint point,
on the tablets of their hearts^(Z)
    and on the horns^(AA) of their altars.
²Even their children remember
    their altars and Asherah poles^[a]^(AB)
beside the spreading trees
    and on the high hills.^(AC)
³My mountain in the land
    and your^[b] wealth and all your treasures
I will give away as plunder,^(AD)
    together with your high places,^(AE)
    because of sin throughout your country.^(AF)
⁴Through your own fault you will lose
    the inheritance^(AG) I gave you.
I will enslave you to your enemies^(AH)
    in a land^(AI) you do not know,
for you have kindled my anger,
    and it will burn^(AJ) forever.”

Final Greetings

⁷Tychicus^(A) will tell you all the news about me. He is a dear brother, a faithful minister and fellow servant^[a]^(B) in the Lord. ⁸I am sending him to you for the express purpose that you may know about our^[b] circumstances and that he may encourage your hearts.^(C) ⁹He is coming with Onesimus,^(D) our faithful and dear brother, who is one of you.^(E) They will tell you everything that is happening here.

¹⁰My fellow prisoner Aristarchus^(F) sends you his greetings, as does Mark,^(G) the cousin of Barnabas.^(H) (You have received instructions about him; if he comes to you, welcome him.) ¹¹Jesus, who is called Justus, also sends greetings. These are the only Jews^[c] among my co-workers^(I) for the kingdom of God, and they have proved a comfort to me. ¹²Epaphras,^(J) who is one of you^(K) and a servant of Christ Jesus, sends greetings. He is always wrestling in prayer for you,^(L) that you may stand firm in all the will of God, mature^(M) and fully assured. ¹³I vouch for him that he is working hard for you and for those at Laodicea^(N) and Hierapolis. ¹⁴Our dear friend Luke,^(O) the doctor, and Demas^(P) send greetings. ¹⁵Give my greetings to the brothers and sisters at Laodicea,^(Q) and to Nympha and the church in her house.^(R)

¹⁶After this letter has been read to you, see that it is also read^(S) in the church of the Laodiceans and that you in turn read the letter from Laodicea.

¹⁷Tell Archippus:^(T) “See to it that you complete the ministry you have received in the Lord.”^(U)
