How Long, O Lord?

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

13 ^(A)How long, O Lord? Will you ^(B)forget me forever?
How long will you ^(C)hide your face from me?
²How long must I take ^(D)counsel in my soul
and have sorrow in my heart all the day?
How long shall my enemy be exalted over me?

³^(E)Consider and answer me, O Lord my God;
^(F)light up my eyes, lest ^(G)I sleep the sleep of death,
⁴^(H)lest my enemy say, “I have prevailed over him,”
lest my foes rejoice because I am ^(I)shaken.

⁵But I have ^(J)trusted in your steadfast love;
my heart shall ^(K)rejoice in your salvation.
⁶I will sing to the Lord,
because he has dealt bountifully with me.

Messengers from John the Baptist

11 When Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and preach in their cities.

²^(A)Now when John heard ^(B)in prison about the deeds of ^(C)the Christ, he sent word by ^(D)his disciples ³and said to him, “Are you ^(E)the one who is to come, or shall we ^(F)look for another?” ⁴And Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John what you hear and see: ⁵^(G)the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers^[a] are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and ^(H)the poor have good news preached to them. ⁶And blessed is the one who ^(I)is not offended by me.”

⁷As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds concerning John: “What did you go out ^(J)into the wilderness to see? ^(K)A reed shaken by the wind? ⁸What then did you go out to see? A man^[b] dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those who wear soft clothing are in kings' houses. ⁹What then did you go out to see? ^(L)A prophet?^[c] Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. ¹⁰This is he of whom it is written,

^(M)“‘Behold, I send my messenger before your face,
who will prepare your way before you.’

¹¹Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has arisen no one greater than John the Baptist. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. ¹²^(N)From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence,^[d] and the violent take it by force. ¹³^(O)For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John, ¹⁴and if you are willing to accept it, he is ^(P)Elijah who is to come. ¹⁵^(Q)He who has ears to hear,^[e] let him hear.

¹⁶“But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to their playmates,

¹⁷“‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.’

¹⁸For John came ^(R)neither eating ^(S)nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ ¹⁹The Son of Man came ^(T)eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, ^(U)a friend of ^(V)tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds.”^[f]

Woe to Unrepentant Cities

²⁰^(W)Then he began to denounce the cities where most of his mighty works had been done, because they did not repent. ²¹^(X)“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works done in you had been done in ^(Y)Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. ²²^(Z)But I tell you, it will be more bearable on ^(AA)the day of judgment for ^(AB)Tyre and Sidon than for you. ²³And you, ^(AC)Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You will be brought down to ^(AD)Hades. For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. ²⁴^(AE)But I tell you that ^(AF)it will be more tolerable on ^(AG)the day of judgment for the land of Sodom than for you.”

Come to Me, and I Will Give You Rest

²⁵^(AH)At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, ^(AI)Lord of heaven and earth, that ^(AJ)you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and ^(AK)revealed them to little children; ²⁶yes, Father, for such was your ^(AL)gracious will.^[g] ²⁷^(AM)All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son ^(AN)except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone ^(AO)to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. ²⁸^(AP)Come to ^(AQ)me, all who labor and are ^(AR)heavy laden, and I will give you rest. ²⁹Take my yoke upon you, and ^(AS)learn from me, for I am ^(AT)gentle and lowly in heart, and ^(AU)you will find rest for your souls. ³⁰For ^(AV)my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Why Have You Forsaken Me?

22 ^(A)My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Why are you so ^(B)far from saving me, from the words of my ^(C)groaning?
²O my God, I cry by ^(D)day, but you do not answer,
and by night, but I find no rest.

³Yet you are ^(E)holy,
    ^(F)enthroned on ^(G)the praises^[a] of Israel.
⁴In you our fathers trusted;
    they trusted, and you delivered them.
⁵To you they ^(H)cried and were rescued;
    in you they ^(I)trusted and were not put to shame.

⁶But I am ^(J)a worm and not a man,
    ^(K)scorned by mankind and ^(L)despised by the people.
⁷All who see me ^(M)mock me;
    they make mouths at me; they ^(N)wag their heads;
⁸^(O)“He trusts in the Lord; let him ^(P)deliver him;
    let him rescue him, for he ^(Q)delights in him!”

⁹Yet you are he who ^(R)took me from the womb;
    you made me trust you at my mother's breasts.
¹⁰On you was I cast from my birth,

    for trouble is near,

¹²Many bulls encompass me;
^(V)strong bulls of ^(W)Bashan surround me;
¹³they ^(X)open wide their mouths at me,
like a ravening and roaring lion.

¹⁴I am ^(Y)poured out like water,
    and all my bones are ^(Z)out of joint;

    it is melted within my breast;
¹⁵my strength is ^(AC)dried up like a potsherd,

and for my clothing they cast lots.

    O you my help, ^(AK)come quickly to my aid!
²⁰Deliver my soul from the sword,
    my precious life from the power of ^(AL)the dog!
²¹    Save me from ^(AM)the mouth of the lion!
You have rescued^[c] me from the horns of ^(AN)the wild oxen!

²²^(AO)I will tell of your name to my ^(AP)brothers;
    in the midst of the congregation I will praise you:
²³You who ^(AQ)fear the Lord, praise him!
    All you offspring of Jacob, ^(AR)glorify him,
    and stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel!
²⁴For he has not despised or abhorred
    the affliction of ^(AS)the afflicted,
and he has not ^(AT)hidden his face from him,
    but has heard, when he ^(AU)cried to him.

²⁵From you comes my praise in the great ^(AV)congregation;
    my ^(AW)vows I will ^(AX)perform before those who fear him.
²⁶^(AY)The afflicted^[d] shall ^(AZ)eat and be satisfied;
    those who seek him shall praise the Lord!
    May your hearts ^(BA)live forever!

²⁷All ^(BB)the ends of the earth shall remember
    and turn to the Lord,
and all ^(BC)the families of the nations
    shall worship before you.
²⁸For ^(BD)kingship belongs to the Lord,
    and he rules over the nations.

²⁹All ^(BE)the prosperous of the earth eat and worship;
    before him shall ^(BF)bow all who go down to the dust,
    even the one who could not ^(BG)keep himself alive.
³⁰Posterity shall serve him;
    it shall be told of the Lord to the coming ^(BH)generation;
³¹they shall ^(BI)come and proclaim his righteousness to a people yet ^(BJ)unborn,
    that he has done it.
