¹⁶⁹May my cry come^(A) before you, Lord;
    give me understanding^(B) according to your word.^(C)
¹⁷⁰May my supplication come^(D) before you;
    deliver me^(E) according to your promise.^(F)
¹⁷¹May my lips overflow with praise,^(G)
    for you teach me^(H) your decrees.
¹⁷²May my tongue sing^(I) of your word,
    for all your commands are righteous.^(J)
¹⁷³May your hand be ready to help^(K) me,
    for I have chosen^(L) your precepts.
¹⁷⁴I long for your salvation,^(M) Lord,
    and your law gives me delight.^(N)
¹⁷⁵Let me live^(O) that I may praise you,
    and may your laws sustain me.
¹⁷⁶I have strayed like a lost sheep.^(P)
    Seek your servant,
    for I have not forgotten^(Q) your commands.

Isaiah 10:12-20

New International Version

¹²When the Lord has finished all his work^(A) against Mount Zion^(B) and Jerusalem, he will say, “I will punish the king of Assyria^(C) for the willful pride^(D) of his heart and the haughty look^(E) in his eyes. ¹³For he says:

“‘By the strength of my hand^(F) I have done this,^(G)
    and by my wisdom, because I have understanding.
I removed the boundaries of nations,
    I plundered their treasures;^(H)
    like a mighty one I subdued^[a] their kings.^(I)
¹⁴As one reaches into a nest,^(J)
    so my hand reached for the wealth^(K) of the nations;
as people gather abandoned eggs,
    so I gathered all the countries;^(L)
not one flapped a wing,
    or opened its mouth to chirp.^(M)’”

¹⁵Does the ax raise itself above the person who swings it,
    or the saw boast against the one who uses it?^(N)
As if a rod were to wield the person who lifts it up,
    or a club^(O) brandish the one who is not wood!
¹⁶Therefore, the Lord, the Lord Almighty,
    will send a wasting disease^(P) upon his sturdy warriors;^(Q)
under his pomp^(R) a fire^(S) will be kindled
    like a blazing flame.
¹⁷The Light of Israel will become a fire,^(T)
    their Holy One^(U) a flame;
in a single day it will burn and consume
    his thorns^(V) and his briers.^(W)
¹⁸The splendor of his forests^(X) and fertile fields
    it will completely destroy,^(Y)
    as when a sick person wastes away.
¹⁹And the remaining trees of his forests^(Z) will be so few^(AA)
    that a child could write them down.

The Remnant of Israel

²⁰In that day^(AB) the remnant of Israel,
    the survivors^(AC) of Jacob,
will no longer rely^(AD) on him
    who struck them down^(AE)
but will truly rely^(AF) on the Lord,
    the Holy One of Israel.^(AG)

Division Over Who Jesus Is

²⁵At that point some of the people of Jerusalem began to ask, “Isn’t this the man they are trying to kill?^(A) ²⁶Here he is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying a word to him. Have the authorities^(B) really concluded that he is the Messiah?^(C) ²⁷But we know where this man is from;^(D) when the Messiah comes, no one will know where he is from.”

²⁸Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts,^(E) cried out, “Yes, you know me, and you know where I am from.^(F) I am not here on my own authority, but he who sent me is true.^(G) You do not know him, ²⁹but I know him^(H) because I am from him and he sent me.”^(I)

³⁰At this they tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him,^(J) because his hour had not yet come.^(K) ³¹Still, many in the crowd believed in him.^(L) They said, “When the Messiah comes, will he perform more signs^(M) than this man?”

³²The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering such things about him. Then the chief priests and the Pharisees sent temple guards to arrest him.

³³Jesus said, “I am with you for only a short time,^(N) and then I am going to the one who sent me.^(O) ³⁴You will look for me, but you will not find me; and where I am, you cannot come.”^(P)

³⁵The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we cannot find him? Will he go where our people live scattered^(Q) among the Greeks,^(R) and teach the Greeks? ³⁶What did he mean when he said, ‘You will look for me, but you will not find me,’ and ‘Where I am, you cannot come’?”^(S)
