²⁰ So the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and he said, “Because this nation has transgressed my covenant that I commanded their ancestors and have not obeyed my voice,^{(A) 21} I will no longer drive out before them any of the nations that Joshua left when he died.”^{(B) 22} In order to test Israel, whether or not they would take care to walk in the way of the Lord as their ancestors did,^{(C) 23} the Lord had left those nations, not driving them out at once, and had not handed them over to Joshua.

⁹ Only, do not rebel against the Lord, and do not fear the people of the land, for they are no more than bread for us; their protection is removed from them, and the Lord is with us; do not fear them.”^(A)

¹³ know assuredly that the Lord your God will not continue to drive out these nations before you, but they shall be a snare and a trap for you, a scourge on your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from this good land that the Lord your God has given you.^(A)

⁴⁵ Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites who lived in that hill country came down and defeated them, pursuing them as far as Hormah.^(A)
