⁶ And in those days people will seek death but will not find it; they will long to die, but death will flee from them.^(A)

²¹ Then those in Judea must flee to the mountains, and those inside the city must leave it, and those out in the country must not enter it,^(A)

⁶ Adoni-bezek fled, but they pursued him and caught him and cut off his thumbs and big toes. ⁷ Adoni-bezek said, “Seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off used to pick up scraps under my table; as I have done, so God has paid me back.” They brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.

⁶⁴ The Lord will scatter you among all peoples, from one end of the earth to the other, and there you shall serve other gods, of wood and stone, which neither you nor your ancestors have known.^(A)

²⁷ The Lord will scatter you among the peoples; only a few of you will be left among the nations where the Lord will lead you.^(A)

¹² When you till the ground, it will no longer yield to you its strength; you will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.”^{(A) 13} Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is greater than I can bear! ¹⁴ Today you have driven me away from the soil, and I shall be hidden from your face; I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and anyone who meets me may kill me.”^{(B) 15} Then the Lord said to him, “Not so!^[a] Whoever kills Cain will suffer a sevenfold vengeance.” And the Lord put a mark on Cain, so that no one who came upon him would kill him.^(C)
