In you our fathers trusted;
    they trusted, and you delivered them.

By faith (A)Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place (B)that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he went to live in (C)the land of promise, as in a foreign land, (D)living in tents (E)with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. 10 For he was looking forward to (F)the city that has (G)foundations, (H)whose designer and builder is God. 11 By faith (I)Sarah herself received power to conceive, even when she was past the age, since she considered (J)him faithful who had promised. 12 Therefore from one man, and (K)him as good as dead, were born descendants (L)as many as the stars of heaven and as many as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore.

13 These all died in faith, (M)not having received the things promised, but (N)having seen them and greeted them from afar, and (O)having acknowledged that they were (P)strangers and exiles on the earth. 14 For people who speak thus make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. 15 If they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out, (Q)they would have had opportunity to return. 16 But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed (R)to be called their God, for (S)he has prepared for them a city.

17 By faith (T)Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was in the act of offering up his only son, 18 of whom it was said, (U)“Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.” 19 (V)He considered that God was able even to raise him from the dead, from which, figuratively speaking, he did receive him back. 20 By faith (W)Isaac invoked future blessings on Jacob and Esau. 21 By faith (X)Jacob, when dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, (Y)bowing in worship over the head of his staff. 22 By faith (Z)Joseph, at the end of his life, made mention of the exodus of the Israelites and gave directions concerning his bones.

23 By faith (AA)Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw that the child was beautiful, and they were not afraid of (AB)the king's edict. 24 By faith Moses, when he was grown up, (AC)refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, 25 (AD)choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy (AE)the fleeting pleasures of sin. 26 (AF)He considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to (AG)the reward. 27 By faith he (AH)left Egypt, (AI)not being afraid of the anger of the king, for he endured (AJ)as seeing him who is invisible. 28 By faith (AK)he kept the Passover and sprinkled the blood, so that the Destroyer of the firstborn might not touch them.

29 By faith (AL)the people crossed the Red Sea as on dry land, but the Egyptians, when they attempted to do the same, were drowned. 30 By faith (AM)the walls of Jericho fell down after they had been encircled for seven days. 31 By faith (AN)Rahab the prostitute did not perish with those who were disobedient, because she (AO)had given a friendly welcome to the spies.

32 And what more shall I say? For time would fail me to tell of (AP)Gideon, (AQ)Barak, (AR)Samson, (AS)Jephthah, of (AT)David and (AU)Samuel and the prophets—

13 And Moses said to the people, (A)“Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will work for you today. For (B)the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall never see again. 14 (C)The Lord will fight for you, and you have only (D)to be silent.”

31 (A)Israel saw the great power that the Lord used against the Egyptians, so the people feared the Lord, and they (B)believed in the Lord and in his servant Moses.

18 In hope he believed against hope, that he should become the father of many nations, as he had been told, (A)“So shall your offspring be.” 19 He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was (B)as good as dead ((C)since he was about a hundred years old), or when he considered (D)the barrenness[a] of Sarah's womb. 20 No unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, 21 fully convinced that (E)God was able to do what he had promised. 22 That is why his faith was “counted to him as righteousness.”

Come to Our Help

To the choirmaster. (A)A Maskil[a] of the Sons of Korah.

44 O God, we have heard with our ears,
    (B)our fathers have told us,
what deeds you performed in their days,
    (C)in the days of old:
you with your own hand (D)drove out the nations,
    but (E)them you planted;
you afflicted the peoples,
    but (F)them you set free;
for not (G)by their own sword did they win the land,
    nor did their own arm save them,
but your right hand and your arm,
    and (H)the light of your face,
    (I)for you delighted in them.

(J)You are my King, O God;
    (K)ordain salvation for Jacob!
Through you we (L)push down our foes;
    through your name we (M)tread down those who rise up against us.
For not in (N)my bow do I trust,
    nor can my sword save me.
But you have saved us from our foes
    and have (O)put to shame those who hate us.

  1. Psalm 44:1 Probably a musical or liturgical term

So Samuel took a nursing lamb and offered it as a whole burnt offering to the Lord. And (A)Samuel cried out to the Lord for Israel, and the Lord answered him. 10 As Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to attack Israel. (B)But the Lord thundered with a mighty sound that day against the Philistines and threw them into confusion, and they were defeated before Israel. 11 And the men of Israel went out from Mizpah and pursued the Philistines and struck them, as far as below Beth-car.

12 Then Samuel (C)took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen[a] and called its name Ebenezer;[b] for he said, “Till now the Lord has helped us.”

And Jacob said, (A)“O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, O Lord who (B)said to me, ‘Return to your country and to your kindred, that I may do you good,’ 10 (C)I am not worthy of the least of all the deeds of steadfast love and all the faithfulness that you have shown to your servant, for with only my staff I crossed this Jordan, and now I have become two camps. 11 Please deliver me from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau, for (D)I fear him, that he may come and attack me, the mothers with the children. 12 But (E)you said, ‘I will surely do you good, and make your offspring as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.’”
