The Blessedness of Unity

A Song of Ascents.

Divisions in the Church

¹⁰ Now I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you be in agreement and that there be no divisions among you but that you be knit together in the same mind and the same purpose.^(A)

Suffering for Doing Right

⁸ Finally, all of you, have unity of spirit, sympathy, love for one another, a tender heart, and a humble mind.^(A)

Service Well-Pleasing to God

13 Let mutual affection continue.

³⁵ By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”^(A)

² make my joy complete: be of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.^{(A) 3} Do nothing from selfish ambition or empty conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves.^{(B) 4} Let each of you look not to your own interests but to the interests of others.^{(C) 5} Let the same mind be in you that was^[a] in Christ Jesus,^(D)

³ making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace: ⁴ there is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling,^{(A) 5} one Lord, one faith, one baptism, ⁶ one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all.^[a]

²¹ that they may all be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us,^[a] so that the world may believe that you have sent me.^(A)

¹⁴ We know that we have passed from death to life because we love the brothers and sisters. Whoever does not love abides in death.^{(A) 15} All who hate a brother or sister are murderers, and you know that murderers do not have eternal life abiding in them.^{(B) 16} We know love by this, that he laid down his life for us—and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers and sisters.^{(C) 17} How does God’s love abide in anyone who has the world’s goods and sees a brother or sister in need and yet refuses help?^(D)

¹⁸ Little children, let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth.^{(E) 19} And by this we will know that we are from the truth and will reassure our hearts before him^(F)
