    in the roar of your waterfalls;
all your waves and breakers
    have swept over me.^(B)

³ The cords of death^(A) entangled me,
    the anguish of the grave came over me;
    I was overcome by distress and sorrow.
⁴ Then I called on the name^(B) of the Lord:
    “Lord, save me!^(C)”

⁵³ They tried to end my life in a pit^(A)
    and threw stones at me;
⁵⁴ the waters closed over my head,^(B)
    and I thought I was about to perish.^(C)

⁵⁵ I called on your name, Lord,
    from the depths^(D) of the pit.^(E)

¹⁴ Rescue me from the mire,
    do not let me sink;
deliver me from those who hate me,
    from the deep waters.^(A)
15 Do not let the floodwaters^(B) engulf me
    or the depths swallow me up^(C)
    or the pit close its mouth over me.^(D)

“In my distress I called^(A) to the Lord,^(B)
    and he answered me.
From deep in the realm of the dead^(C) I called for help,
    and you listened to my cry.
³ You hurled me into the depths,^(D)
    into the very heart of the seas,
    and the currents swirled about me;
all your waves^(E) and breakers
    swept over me.^(F)
4 I said, ‘I have been banished
    from your sight;^(G)
yet I will look again
    toward your holy temple.’^(H)

¹⁶ Turn to me^(A) and be gracious to me,^(B)
    for I am lonely^(C) and afflicted.
¹⁷ Relieve the troubles^(D) of my heart
    and free me from my anguish.^(E)
18 Look on my affliction^(F) and my distress^(G)
