¹⁷ Some were fools; they rebelled
    and suffered for their sins.

³⁹ Then why should we, mere humans, complain
    when we are punished for our sins?

¹⁹ Your wickedness will bring its own punishment.
    Your turning from me will shame you.
You will see what an evil, bitter thing it is
    to abandon the Lord your God and not to fear him.
    I, the Lord, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, have spoken!

⁶ “Look, my decree is written out^[a] in front of me:
    I will not stand silent;
I will repay them in full!
    Yes, I will repay them—
⁷ both for their own sins
    and for those of their ancestors,”
    says the Lord.
“For they also burned incense on the mountains
    and insulted me on the hills.
    I will pay them back in full!

⁷ I saw some naive young men,
    and one in particular who lacked common sense.

⁶ Only a simpleton would not know,
    and only a fool would not understand this:

¹ O Lord, don’t rebuke me in your anger
    or discipline me in your rage!
² Your arrows have struck deep,
    and your blows are crushing me.
³ Because of your anger, my whole body is sick;
    my health is broken because of my sins.
⁴ My guilt overwhelms me—
    it is a burden too heavy to bear.
⁵ My wounds fester and stink
    because of my foolish sins.
⁶ I am bent over and racked with pain.
    All day long I walk around filled with grief.
⁷ A raging fever burns within me,
    and my health is broken.
⁸ I am exhausted and completely crushed.
    My groans come from an anguished heart.
