⁵ His ways are always prosperous;
    your laws are rejected by^[a] him;
    he sneers at all his enemies.

¹¹ Lord, your hand is lifted high,^(A)
    but they do not see^(B) it.
Let them see your zeal^(C) for your people and be put to shame;^(D)
    let the fire^(E) reserved for your enemies consume them.

⁵ How great are your works,^(A) Lord,
    how profound your thoughts!^(B)
6 Senseless people^(C) do not know,
    fools do not understand,

⁵ “Because the poor are plundered^(A) and the needy groan,^(B)
    I will now arise,^(C)” says the Lord.
    “I will protect them^(D) from those who malign them.”

¹⁶     ruin and misery mark their ways,

⁹ Who is wise?^(A) Let them realize these things.
    Who is discerning? Let them understand.^(B)
The ways of the Lord are right;^(C)
    the righteous walk^(D) in them,
    but the rebellious stumble in them.

⁹ They have sunk deep into corruption,^(A)
    as in the days of Gibeah.^(B)
God will remember^(C) their wickedness
    and punish them for their sins.^(D)

²⁵ So he poured out on them his burning anger,^(A)
    the violence of war.
It enveloped them in flames,^(B) yet they did not understand;^(C)
    it consumed them, but they did not take it to heart.^(D)

¹⁵ You boast, “We have entered into a covenant with death,^(A)
    with the realm of the dead we have made an agreement.
When an overwhelming scourge sweeps by,^(B)
    it cannot touch us,
for we have made a lie^(C) our refuge
    and falsehood^[a] our hiding place.^(D)”
