17 Better a dry crust with peace and quiet
than a house full of feasting, with strife.(A)
2 A prudent servant will rule over a disgraceful son
and will share the inheritance as one of the family.
4 A wicked person listens to deceitful lips;
a liar pays attention to a destructive tongue.
5 Whoever mocks the poor(D) shows contempt for their Maker;(E)
whoever gloats over disaster(F) will not go unpunished.(G)
6 Children’s children(H) are a crown to the aged,
and parents are the pride of their children.
7 Eloquent lips are unsuited to a godless fool—
how much worse lying lips to a ruler!(I)
8 A bribe is seen as a charm by the one who gives it;
they think success will come at every turn.(J)
9 Whoever would foster love covers over an offense,(K)
but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends.(L)
10 A rebuke impresses a discerning person
more than a hundred lashes a fool.
11 Evildoers foster rebellion against God;
the messenger of death will be sent against them.
12 Better to meet a bear robbed of her cubs
than a fool bent on folly.(M)
14 Starting a quarrel is like breaching a dam;
so drop the matter before a dispute breaks out.(P)
16 Why should fools have money in hand to buy wisdom,
when they are not able to understand it?(S)
17 A friend loves at all times,
and a brother is born for a time of adversity.(T)
18 One who has no sense shakes hands in pledge
and puts up security for a neighbor.(U)
19 Whoever loves a quarrel loves sin;
whoever builds a high gate invites destruction.
20 One whose heart is corrupt does not prosper;
one whose tongue is perverse falls into trouble.
21 To have a fool for a child brings grief;
there is no joy for the parent of a godless fool.(V)
24 A discerning person keeps wisdom in view,
but a fool’s eyes(AA) wander to the ends of the earth.
25 A foolish son brings grief to his father
and bitterness to the mother who bore him.(AB)
26 If imposing a fine on the innocent is not good,(AC)
surely to flog honest officials is not right.
27 The one who has knowledge uses words with restraint,(AD)
and whoever has understanding is even-tempered.(AE)
28 Even fools are thought wise if they keep silent,
and discerning if they hold their tongues.(AF)

17 Better is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, than an house full of sacrifices with strife.
2 A wise servant shall have rule over a son that causeth shame, and shall have part of the inheritance among the brethren.
3 The fining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: but the Lord trieth the hearts.
4 A wicked doer giveth heed to false lips; and a liar giveth ear to a naughty tongue.
5 Whoso mocketh the poor reproacheth his Maker: and he that is glad at calamities shall not be unpunished.
6 Children's children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.
7 Excellent speech becometh not a fool: much less do lying lips a prince.
8 A gift is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it: whithersoever it turneth, it prospereth.
9 He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends.
10 A reproof entereth more into a wise man than an hundred stripes into a fool.
11 An evil man seeketh only rebellion: therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.
12 Let a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man, rather than a fool in his folly.
13 Whoso rewardeth evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.
14 The beginning of strife is as when one letteth out water: therefore leave off contention, before it be meddled with.
15 He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, even they both are abomination to the Lord.
16 Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to get wisdom, seeing he hath no heart to it?

18 A man void of understanding striketh hands, and becometh surety in the presence of his friend.
19 He loveth transgression that loveth strife: and he that exalteth his gate seeketh destruction.
20 He that hath a froward heart findeth no good: and he that hath a perverse tongue falleth into mischief.
21 He that begetteth a fool doeth it to his sorrow: and the father of a fool hath no joy.
22 A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.
23 A wicked man taketh a gift out of the bosom to pervert the ways of judgment.
24 Wisdom is before him that hath understanding; but the eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth.
25 A foolish son is a grief to his father, and bitterness to her that bare him.
26 Also to punish the just is not good, nor to strike princes for equity.
27 He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.
28 Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.

17 Bedre et stykke tørt brød med ro og fred enn et hus fullt av slakt med trette.
2 En klok tjener får råde over en dårlig sønn, og iblandt brødrene får han del i arven.
3 Der er digel for sølv og ovn for gull; men den som prøver hjertene, er Herren.
4 Den onde akter på ondskaps lebe; løgneren lytter til ødeleggelses tunge.
5 Den som spotter den fattige, håner hans skaper; den som gleder sig over ulykke, skal ikke bli ustraffet.
6 De gamles krone er barnebarn, og barns pryd er deres fedre.
7 Det sømmer sig ikke for dåren å tale store ord, enn mindre for den høibårne å tale løgn.
8 Gave er en edelsten i dens øine som får den; hvor den kommer, gjør den lykke.
9 Den som dekker over overtredelse, søker kjærlighet; men den som ripper op en sak, skiller venn fra venn.
10 Skjenn virker bedre på den forstandige enn hundre slag på dåren.
11 En ond manns hu står bare til gjenstridighet, og en ubarmhjertig engel sendes imot ham.
12 Bedre for en mann å møte en bjørn som ungene er tatt fra, enn en dåre i hans dårskap.
13 Den som gjengjelder godt med ondt, fra hans hus skal ulykken ikke vike.
14 Å begynne trette er som å åpne for vann; la da tretten fare, før den blir for voldsom!
15 Den som frikjenner en ugudelig, og den som domfeller en rettferdig, de er begge to en vederstyggelighet for Herren.

17 En venn elsker alltid, og en bror fødes til hjelp i nød.

19 Den som elsker trette, elsker synd; den som gjør sin dør høi, søker sin egen undergang.
20 Den som er falsk i hjertet, finner intet godt, og den som er vrang i sin tale, faller i ulykke.
21 Den som har en narr til sønn, får sorg av ham; en dåres far har ingen glede.
22 Et glad hjerte gir god lægedom, men et nedslått mot tar margen fra benene.
23 Den ugudelige tar gaver ut av barmen for å bøie rettens gang.
24 Den forstandige har visdommen for øie, men dårens øine er ved jordens ende.
25 En uforstandig sønn er en gremmelse for sin far og en bitter sorg for henne som fødte ham.
26 Å straffe også den rettferdige er ikke godt; å slå edle menn er tvert imot all rett.
27 Den som er sparsom med sine ord, er klok, og den koldsindige er en forstandig mann.
28 Også dåren aktes for klok når han tier, for vis når han holder sine leber lukket.

17 Es mejor comer pan duro,
pero vivir en paz,
que hacer muchas fiestas en la casa,
pero vivir peleando.
2 Un servidor inteligente tendrá más poder que el hijo malo de su patrón,
y tendrá parte de la herencia con los otros hermanos.
3 El oro y la plata se purifican con fuego,
pero el SEÑOR purifica el corazón de los seres humanos.
4 El perverso sólo escucha perversiones;
el mentiroso sólo escucha falsedades.
5 El que se burla del pobre ofende a su Creador;
el que se alegra de verlo sufriendo no se librará del castigo.
6 Los nietos hacen felices a los abuelos,
y los niños se sienten orgullosos de sus padres.
7 No es sabio que un tonto hable demasiado,
ni que un gobernante diga mentiras.
8 El soborno parece un amuleto para quien lo practica,
pues le funciona a dondequiera que va.
9 El perdón restaura la amistad,
el rencor la termina.
10 Aprovecha más un regaño al inteligente,
que cien golpes al bruto.
11 El revoltoso sólo quiere el mal,
pero al final le enviarán un mensajero que lo castigue.
12 Es preferible encontrarse con una osa furiosa que ha perdido su cría,
que con un bruto decidido a hacer algo.
13 No le hagas mal al que te hace el bien,
porque lo pagarás el resto de tu vida.
14 Iniciar un pleito es como abrir una represa;
vale más retirarse que enredarse.
15 Dos cosas detesta el SEÑOR:
que se castigue al inocente y que se perdone al culpable.
16 ¿De qué le sirve al bruto tener dinero?
¿Es que acaso puede comprar sabiduría faltándole cerebro?
17 El amigo siempre lo estima a uno;
en tiempos difíciles es como un hermano.
18 Sólo el torpe se compromete
a ser fiador de las deudas de otro.
19 Al que le gusta discutir, le gusta pelear;
el que tira la casa por la ventana[a] pronto se va a arruinar.
20 El de mente corrompida jamás prosperará;
el de lengua mentirosa se meterá en problemas.
21 Engendrar un hijo bruto es acarrearse tristeza;
ser el papá de un tonto no es ninguna alegría.
22 La alegría es como una buena medicina,
pero el desánimo es como una enfermedad.
23 El perverso acepta sobornos
para corromper la justicia.
24 El sabio siempre busca la solución más práctica,
pero el tonto anda por las nubes.
25 Un hijo bruto causa vergüenza al papá,
y dolor y tristeza a la mamá.
26 No es bueno castigar al inocente
ni azotar al líder honesto.
27 El que es inteligente mide sus palabras;
el que es prudente mantiene la calma.
28 Si el ignorante calla, pasa por sabio;
si no abre la boca, pasa por inteligente.

17 It is better to have nothing but a dry piece of bread to eat in peace than a whole house full of food with everyone arguing.
2 A smart servant will gain control over his master’s foolish son. He will be treated like a son and get a share of the inheritance.
3 Fire is used to make gold and silver pure, but a person’s heart is made pure by the Lord.
4 People who do evil listen to evil ideas. Liars listen to liars.
5 Whoever makes fun of beggars insults their Maker. Whoever laughs at someone else’s trouble will be punished.
6 Grandchildren are the pride and joy of old age, and children take great pride in their parents.
7 You wouldn’t expect to hear a fine speech from a fool, and you shouldn’t expect lies from a ruler.
8 Some people think a bribe is like a lucky charm—it seems to work wherever they go.
9 Forgive someone, and you will strengthen your friendship. Keep reminding them, and you will destroy it.
10 Smart people learn more from a single correction than fools learn from a hundred beatings.
11 Those who are evil only want to cause trouble. In the end, punishment without mercy will be sent to them.
12 It is better to meet a bear robbed of her cubs than a fool who is busy doing foolish things.
13 If you do wrong to those who were good to you, you will have trouble the rest of your life.
14 The start of an argument is like a small leak in a dam. Stop it before a big fight breaks out.
15 The Lord hates these two things: punishing the innocent and letting the guilty go free.
16 Money is wasted on fools. They cannot buy wisdom when they have no sense.
17 A friend loves you all the time, but a brother was born to help in times of trouble.
18 Only a fool would promise to pay for someone else’s debts.
19 A troublemaker loves to start arguments. Anyone who likes to brag is asking for trouble.
20 Crooks will not profit from their crimes, and those who plan to cause trouble will be trapped when it comes.
21 A man who has a fool for a son will be disappointed. A fool brings no joy to his father.
22 Happiness is good medicine, but sorrow is a disease.
23 A wicked judge will accept a bribe, and that keeps justice from being done.
24 Intelligent people think about what needs to be done here and now. Fools are always dreaming about faraway places.
25 Foolish children upset their parents and make them sad.
26 It is wrong to punish an innocent person or attack leaders for doing what is right.
27 Intelligent people choose their words carefully. Those who know what they are doing remain calm.[a]
28 Silent fools seem wise. They say nothing and appear to be smart.
