^44 (A)You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. ^(B)He was a murderer from the beginning, and ^(C)does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. ^(D)When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. ⁴⁵ But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me. ⁴⁶ Which one of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? ^47 (E)Whoever is of God hears the words of God. ^(F)The reason why you do not hear them is that ^(G)you are not of God.”

Before Abraham Was, I Am

⁴⁸ The Jews answered him, “Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and ^(H)have a demon?” ⁴⁹ Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon, but ^(I)I honor my Father, and you dishonor me.

³² Jesus answered them, “I have shown you many good works from the Father; for which of them are you going to stone me?” ³³ The Jews answered him, “It is not for a good work that we are going to stone you but ^(A)for blasphemy, because you, being a man, ^(B)make yourself God.”

⁴⁰ but now ^(A)you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth ^(B)that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did.

^20 (A)So they ^(B)watched him and sent spies, who ^(C)pretended to be sincere, that they might ^(D)catch him in something he said, so as to deliver him up to the authority and jurisdiction of ^(E)the governor. ²¹ So they asked him, “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach rightly, and ^(F)show no partiality,^[a] but truly teach ^(G)the way of God.
