Förtryck, möda och ensamhet
4 (A) Vidare såg jag de våldsdåd som begås under solen. Jag såg de förtrycktas tårar, och ingen tröstade dem. Våld kom från förtryckarnas hand[a], och ingen tröstade dem. 2 (B) Då prisade jag de döda som redan hade dött, de var lyckligare än de levande som ännu levde. 3 (C) Men lyckligare än båda är den som ännu inte blivit till, den som inte har sett det onda som görs under solen.
4 (D) Jag såg att all möda och framgång i arbetet beror på den enes avund mot den andre. Också det är förgängligt och ett jagande efter vind. 5 (E) Dåren lägger händerna i kors och förtär sig själv. 6 Bättre en handfull ro än båda händerna fulla med möda och jagande efter vind.
7 Och jag såg något mer som var förgängligt under solen: 8 (F) En som är ensam och ingen har vid sin sida, varken son eller bror. Ändå är det ingen ände på allt hans slit, och hans ögon blir inte mätta på rikedom. För vem sliter jag då och nekar mig själv det goda? Också det är förgängligt och en bedrövlig möda.
9 (G) Bättre två än en, för de får god lön för sin möda. 10 Om de faller, kan den ene resa upp den andre. Men ve den som är ensam! Faller han, finns det ingen som kan resa upp honom. 11 Likaså: om två ligger tillsammans har de det varmt. Men hur ska den ensamme hålla sig varm? 12 (H) Där en blir övermannad kan två stå emot. Och en tretvinnad tråd brister inte så lätt.
Jordisk makt är förgänglig
13 Bättre en ung[b] som är fattig och vis än en kung som är gammal och dåraktig och inte längre förstår att ta varning. 14 (I) Ja, han kom ut från fångarnas hus för att bli kung, fastän han föddes fattig i sitt rike. 15 Jag såg alla som levde och rörde sig under solen tillsammans med den unge som skulle ta den andres plats. 16 Det var ingen ände på allt folket, på alla som han gick i spetsen för.[c] Men ändå har de som kommer efter ingen glädje av honom. Också det är förgängligt och ett jagande efter vind.
Förhastade löften
17 (J) Vakta din fot när du går till Guds hus. Att komma för att lyssna är bättre än offret som dårarna ger, för de förstår inte att de gör det som är ont.

Oppression, Toil, Friendlessness
4 Again I looked and saw all the oppression(A) that was taking place under the sun:
I saw the tears of the oppressed—
and they have no comforter;
power was on the side of their oppressors—
and they have no comforter.(B)
2 And I declared that the dead,(C)
who had already died,
are happier than the living,
who are still alive.(D)
3 But better than both
is the one who has never been born,(E)
who has not seen the evil
that is done under the sun.(F)
4 And I saw that all toil and all achievement spring from one person’s envy of another. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.(G)
5 Fools fold their hands(H)
and ruin themselves.
6 Better one handful with tranquillity
than two handfuls with toil(I)
and chasing after the wind.
7 Again I saw something meaningless under the sun:
8 There was a man all alone;
he had neither son nor brother.
There was no end to his toil,
yet his eyes were not content(J) with his wealth.
“For whom am I toiling,” he asked,
“and why am I depriving myself of enjoyment?”
This too is meaningless—
a miserable business!
9 Two are better than one,
because they have a good return for their labor:
10 If either of them falls down,
one can help the other up.
But pity anyone who falls
and has no one to help them up.
11 Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm.
But how can one keep warm alone?
12 Though one may be overpowered,
two can defend themselves.
A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.
Advancement Is Meaningless
13 Better a poor but wise youth than an old but foolish king who no longer knows how to heed a warning. 14 The youth may have come from prison to the kingship, or he may have been born in poverty within his kingdom. 15 I saw that all who lived and walked under the sun followed the youth, the king’s successor. 16 There was no end to all the people who were before them. But those who came later were not pleased with the successor. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

4 И вновь посмотрел я и увидел все те угнетения, которые делаются под солнцем:
я видел слёзы угнетённых,
но никто их не утешит;
сила на стороне их угнетателей,
а у них нет утешителя.
2 И посчитал я, что те, кто уже умер,
счастливее тех, кто ещё жив.
3 Но лучше всего тому,
кто ещё не был рождён,
кто ещё не видел зла,
которое творится под солнцем.
4 И увидел я, что весь труд и все достижения происходят от зависти людей друг к другу. И это тоже пустое, это – погоня за ветром.
5 Глупый сидит сложа руки
и слабеет от голода.
6 Лучше одна горсть с покоем,
чем две горсти с трудом
и погоней за ветром.
Одиночество
7 И снова увидел я нечто пустое под солнцем:
8 вот одинокий человек,
и никого нет рядом с ним;
нет у него ни сына, ни брата.
Трудам его нет конца,
но глаза его не насыщаются богатством.
«Для кого же я тружусь, – думает он, –
и почему я лишаю себя удовольствий?»
Это тоже пустое –
несчастное дело!
9 Двоим лучше, чем одному,
потому что они получат хорошую награду за свой труд.
10 Если один упадёт,
то его друг поможет ему встать.
Но горе тому, кто упадёт,
и не будет никого, кто помог бы ему подняться!
11 И если двое лягут вместе, то им будет тепло.
Но как согреться одному?
12 Хотя одного и можно одолеть,
двое смогут защититься.
Верёвка, свитая из трёх нитей, не скоро порвётся.
Возвышение – пусто
13 Лучше бедный, но мудрый юноша, чем старый, но глупый царь, который уже не прислушивается к советам. 14 Юноша вышел из темницы, чтобы стать царём, хотя он и родился бедным в своём царстве. 15 Я увидел, что все, кто жил и ходил под солнцем, последовали за юношей – преемником царя. 16 Не было числа народу, что был на его стороне. Но тем, кто родился позже, не был угоден преемник. Это тоже пустое, это – погоня за ветром.
Благоговение перед Всевышним
17 Следи за своим поведением, когда идёшь в дом Всевышнего. Лучше прийти туда, чтобы слушать, нежели приносить необдуманную жертву, подобно глупцам, которые даже не знают, что творят зло.

4 So I returned, and considered all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold the tears of such as were oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but they had no comforter.
2 Wherefore I praised the dead which are already dead more than the living which are yet alive.
3 Yea, better is he than both they, which hath not yet been, who hath not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.
4 Again, I considered all travail, and every right work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbour. This is also vanity and vexation of spirit.
5 The fool foldeth his hands together, and eateth his own flesh.
6 Better is an handful with quietness, than both the hands full with travail and vexation of spirit.
7 Then I returned, and I saw vanity under the sun.
8 There is one alone, and there is not a second; yea, he hath neither child nor brother: yet is there no end of all his labour; neither is his eye satisfied with riches; neither saith he, For whom do I labour, and bereave my soul of good? This is also vanity, yea, it is a sore travail.
9 Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour.
10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.
11 Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone?
12 And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
13 Better is a poor and a wise child than an old and foolish king, who will no more be admonished.
14 For out of prison he cometh to reign; whereas also he that is born in his kingdom becometh poor.
15 I considered all the living which walk under the sun, with the second child that shall stand up in his stead.
16 There is no end of all the people, even of all that have been before them: they also that come after shall not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and vexation of spirit.
