“If (A)thieves came to you,
If [a]robbers by night—
Oh how you will be ruined!—
Would they not thieve only [b]until they had enough?
If grape gatherers came to you,
(B)Would they not allow some gleanings to remain?
Oh how Esau will be (C)searched out
And his hidden treasures ransacked!
All the (D)men who have [c]a covenant with you
Will send you forth to the border,
And the men at peace with you
Will deceive you and overpower you.
They who eat your (E)bread
Will set an ambush for you.
(There is (F)no discernment [d]in him.)
Will I not on that day,” declares Yahweh,
(G)Cause the wise men to perish from Edom
And discernment from the mountain of Esau?
Then your (H)mighty men will be dismayed, O (I)Teman,
So that each one may be (J)cut off from the mountain of Esau by slaughter.

“In that day,” declares the Lord,
    “will I not destroy(D) the wise men of Edom,
    those of understanding in the mountains of Esau?
Your warriors, Teman,(E) will be terrified,
    and everyone in Esau’s mountains
    will be cut down in the slaughter.
