Moab Seduces Israel

25 While Israel dwelt in Shittim, the people began to commit harlotry with the women of Moab. ² They called the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate and bowed down to their gods. ³ Israel joined himself to the Baal of Peor, and the anger of the Lord was inflamed against Israel.

⁴ The Lord said to Moses, “Take all the chiefs of the people and hang them before the Lord in the sun, that the fierce anger of the Lord turn from Israel.”

⁵ Moses said to the judges of Israel, “Kill each of the men who have aligned themselves with the Baal of Peor.”
