²² They went up through the Negev and came to Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the descendants of Anak,^(A) were living. Hebron was built seven years before Zoan^(B) in Egypt.

¹³ Then Joshua blessed Caleb son of Jephunneh and gave him Hebron as an inheritance.^{(A) 14} Therefore, Hebron belongs to Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite as an inheritance to this day,^(B) because he remained loyal to the Lord, the God of Israel. ¹⁵ Hebron’s name used to be Kiriath-arba; Arba was the greatest man among the Anakim.^(C) After this, the land had rest from war.

¹¹ They gave them Kiriath-arba^(A) (that is, Hebron) with its surrounding pasturelands in the hill country of Judah. Arba was the father of Anak. ¹² But they gave the fields and villages of the city to Caleb son of Jephunneh as his possession.
