⁶ But some of them could not celebrate the Passover on that day because they were ceremonially unclean^(A) on account of a dead body.^(B) So they came to Moses and Aaron^(C) that same day

² and stood before Moses,^(A) Eleazar the priest, the leaders^(B) and the whole assembly at the entrance to the tent of meeting^(C) and said,

¹⁵ Moses answered him, “Because the people come to me to seek God’s will.^(A)

¹⁶ “Anyone out in the open who touches someone who has been killed with a sword or someone who has died a natural death,^(A) or anyone who touches a human bone^(B) or a grave,^(C) will be unclean for seven days.^(D)

¹¹ “Whoever touches a human corpse^(A) will be unclean for seven days.^(B)

² “Command the Israelites to send away from the camp anyone who has a defiling skin disease^[a](A) or a discharge^(B) of any kind, or who is ceremonially unclean^(C) because of a dead body.^(D)

Jesus Before Pilate^(A)

²⁸ Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor.^(B) By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace,^(C) because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover.^(D)

¹⁸ Then a man who is ceremonially clean is to take some hyssop,^(A) dip it in the water and sprinkle^(B) the tent and all the furnishings and the people who were there. He must also sprinkle anyone who has touched a human bone or a grave^(C) or anyone who has been killed or anyone who has died a natural death.

²⁶ They served as judges^(A) for the people at all times. The difficult cases^(B) they brought to Moses, but the simple ones they decided themselves.^(C)
