³ “‘Your southern side will include some of the Desert of Zin^(A) along the border of Edom. Your southern boundary will start in the east from the southern end of the Dead Sea,^(B)

³ All these latter kings joined forces in the Valley of Siddim^(A) (that is, the Dead Sea Valley^(B)).

The Boundaries of the Land

¹³ This is what the Sovereign Lord says: “These are the boundaries^(A) of the land that you will divide among the twelve tribes of Israel as their inheritance, with two portions for Joseph.^(B)

²¹ “You are to distribute this land among yourselves according to the tribes of Israel. ²² You are to allot it as an inheritance^(G) for yourselves and for the foreigners^(H) residing among you and who have children. You are to consider them as native-born Israelites; along with you they are to be allotted an inheritance among the tribes of Israel.^{(I) 23} In whatever tribe a foreigner resides, there you are to give them their inheritance,” declares the Sovereign Lord.^(J)

⁸ He said to me, “This water flows toward the eastern region and goes down into the Arabah,^[a](A) where it enters the Dead Sea. When it empties into the sea, the salty water there becomes fresh.^(B)

Allotment for Judah^(A)

15 The allotment for the tribe of Judah, according to its clans, extended down to the territory of Edom,^(B) to the Desert of Zin^(C) in the extreme south.^(D)

These are the boundaries around the people of Judah by their clans.

¹⁶ the water from upstream stopped flowing.^(A) It piled up in a heap^(B) a great distance away, at a town called Adam in the vicinity of Zarethan,^(C) while the water flowing down^(D) to the Sea of the Arabah^(E) (that is, the Dead Sea^(F)) was completely cut off.^(G) So the people crossed over opposite Jericho.^(H)

³¹ “I will establish your borders from the Red Sea^[a] to the Mediterranean Sea,^[b] and from the desert to the Euphrates River.^(A) I will give into your hands the people who live in the land, and you will drive them out^(B) before you.
