⁶⁴ Among these there was not one of those enrolled by Moses and Aaron the priest, who had enrolled the Israelites in the wilderness of Sinai.^(A)

¹⁴ And the length of time we had traveled from Kadesh-barnea until we crossed the Wadi Zered was thirty-eight years, until the entire generation of warriors had perished from the camp, as the Lord had sworn concerning them.^{(A) 15} Indeed, the Lord’s own hand was against them, to root them out from the camp, until all had perished.^(B)

¹⁷ And with whom was he angry forty years? Was it not those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness?^(A)

⁵ Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them, and they were struck down in the wilderness.^(A)

³ You have seen for yourselves what the Lord did with regard to the Baal of Peor, how the Lord your God destroyed from among you everyone who followed the Baal of Peor,^{(A) 4} while those of you who held fast to the Lord your God are all alive today.

²⁹ your dead bodies shall fall in this very wilderness, and of all your number included in the census from twenty years old and up who have complained against me,^(A)

The First Census of Israel

1 The Lord spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying,^{(A) 2} “Take a census of the whole congregation of Israelites, in their clans, by ancestral houses, according to the number of names, every male individually,^(B)
