^28 (A)However, the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. And besides, we saw the descendants of Anak there.

Not Because of Righteousness

9 “Hear, O Israel: you are ^(A)to cross over the Jordan today, to go in to dispossess nations ^(B)greater and mightier than you, cities great and fortified up to heaven, ² a people great and tall, ^(C)the sons of the Anakim, ^(D)whom you know, and of whom you have heard it said, ‘Who can stand before the sons of Anak?’

²⁸ Where are we going up? ^(A)Our brothers have made our hearts melt, saying, ^(B)“The people are greater and taller than we. The cities are great and fortified up to heaven. And besides, we have seen ^(C)the sons of the Anakim there.”’

³³ And there we saw the ^(A)Nephilim (the sons of Anak, who come from the ^(B)Nephilim), and we seemed to ourselves ^(C)like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.”

¹⁴ And Caleb drove out from there the three sons of Anak, ^(A)Sheshai and Ahiman and Talmai, the descendants of Anak.

²² There was none of the Anakim left in the land of the people of Israel. Only in Gaza, ^(A)in Gath, and in Ashdod did some remain.

⁵ All these were cities fortified with high walls, gates, and bars, besides very many unwalled villages.

^21 (A)a people great and many, and tall as the Anakim; but the Lord destroyed them before the Ammonites,^[a] and they dispossessed them and settled in their place,

¹⁰ (^(A)The Emim formerly lived there, ^(B)a people great and many, and tall ^(C)as the Anakim. ¹¹ Like the Anakim they are also counted as ^(D)Rephaim, but the Moabites call them Emim.

^20 (A)And Hebron was given to Caleb, as Moses had said. And he drove out from it ^(B)the three sons of Anak.
