Now it happened that when I heard these words, (A)I sat down and wept and mourned for days; and I was fasting and praying before (B)the God of heaven. I said, “I beseech You, O [a]Yahweh, the God of heaven, (C)the great and fearsome God, (D)who keeps the covenant and lovingkindness for those who love Him and keep His commandments, (E)let Your ear now be attentive and Your eyes open to hear the prayer of Your slave which I am praying before You today, day and night, on behalf of the sons of Israel Your slaves, (F)confessing the sins of the sons of Israel which we have sinned against You; (G)I and my father’s house have sinned. (H)We have worked in utter destruction against You and have not kept the commandments, nor the statutes, nor the judgments (I)which You commanded Your [b]servant Moses. Remember the word which You commanded Your [c]servant Moses, saying, ‘(J)If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the peoples; (K)but if you return to Me and keep My commandments and do them, though those of you who have been banished were at the ends of the sky, I (L)will gather them from there and will bring them (M)to the place where I have chosen to cause My name to dwell.’ 10 (N)They are Your slaves and Your people whom You redeemed by Your great power and by Your strong hand. 11 O Lord, I beseech You, (O)may Your ear be attentive to the prayer of Your slave and the prayer of Your slaves who delight to fear Your name, and make Your slave successful today and grant him compassion before this man.”

Now I was the (P)cupbearer to the king.

When I heard these things, I sat down and wept.(A) For some days I mourned and fasted(B) and prayed before the God of heaven. Then I said:

Lord, the God of heaven, the great and awesome God,(C) who keeps his covenant of love(D) with those who love him and keep his commandments, let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear(E) the prayer(F) your servant is praying before you day and night for your servants, the people of Israel. I confess(G) the sins we Israelites, including myself and my father’s family, have committed against you. We have acted very wickedly(H) toward you. We have not obeyed the commands, decrees and laws you gave your servant Moses.

“Remember(I) the instruction you gave your servant Moses, saying, ‘If you are unfaithful, I will scatter(J) you among the nations, but if you return to me and obey my commands, then even if your exiled people are at the farthest horizon, I will gather(K) them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen as a dwelling for my Name.’(L)

10 “They are your servants and your people, whom you redeemed by your great strength and your mighty hand.(M) 11 Lord, let your ear be attentive(N) to the prayer of this your servant and to the prayer of your servants who delight in revering your name. Give your servant success today by granting him favor(O) in the presence of this man.”

I was cupbearer(P) to the king.
