Now it happened that when I heard these words, (A)I sat down and wept and mourned for days; and I was fasting and praying before (B)the God of heaven. I said, “I beseech You, O [a]Yahweh, the God of heaven, (C)the great and fearsome God, (D)who keeps the covenant and lovingkindness for those who love Him and keep His commandments, (E)let Your ear now be attentive and Your eyes open to hear the prayer of Your slave which I am praying before You today, day and night, on behalf of the sons of Israel Your slaves, (F)confessing the sins of the sons of Israel which we have sinned against You; (G)I and my father’s house have sinned. (H)We have worked in utter destruction against You and have not kept the commandments, nor the statutes, nor the judgments (I)which You commanded Your [b]servant Moses. Remember the word which You commanded Your [c]servant Moses, saying, ‘(J)If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the peoples; (K)but if you return to Me and keep My commandments and do them, though those of you who have been banished were at the ends of the sky, I (L)will gather them from there and will bring them (M)to the place where I have chosen to cause My name to dwell.’ 10 (N)They are Your slaves and Your people whom You redeemed by Your great power and by Your strong hand. 11 O Lord, I beseech You, (O)may Your ear be attentive to the prayer of Your slave and the prayer of Your slaves who delight to fear Your name, and make Your slave successful today and grant him compassion before this man.”

Now I was the (P)cupbearer to the king.

Nehemiah’s Prayer

When I heard these words, I sat down and wept. I mourned for a number of days, fasting and praying(A) before the God of the heavens.(B) I said,(C)

Lord, the God of the heavens, the great and awe-inspiring God who keeps his gracious covenant with those who love him(D) and keep his commands,(E) let your eyes be open and your ears be attentive(F) to hear your servant’s prayer that I now pray to you day and night(G) for your servants, the Israelites. I confess the sins[a] we have committed against you. Both I and my father’s family have sinned.(H) We have acted corruptly toward you and have not kept the commands, statutes, and ordinances you gave your servant Moses.(I) Please remember what you commanded your servant Moses: “If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the peoples.(J) But if you return to me and carefully observe my commands, even though your exiles were banished to the farthest horizon,[b] I will gather them from there and bring them to the place where I chose to have my name dwell.”(K) 10 They are your servants and your people. You redeemed them by your great power and strong hand.(L) 11 Please, Lord, let your ear be attentive(M) to the prayer of your servant and to that of your servants who delight to revere your name. Give your servant success today,(N) and grant him compassion in the presence of this man.[c](O)

At the time, I was the king’s cupbearer.(P)
