⁴ Before this, Eliashib the priest had been put in charge of the storerooms^(A) of the house of our God. He was closely associated with Tobiah,^(B)

⁴⁴ At that time men were appointed to be in charge of the storerooms^(A) for the contributions, firstfruits and tithes.^(B) From the fields around the towns they were to bring into the storerooms the portions required by the Law for the priests and the Levites, for Judah was pleased with the ministering priests and Levites.^(C)

²⁸ One of the sons of Joiada son of Eliashib^(A) the high priest was son-in-law to Sanballat^(B) the Horonite. And I drove him away from me.

¹⁷ Also, in those days the nobles of Judah were sending many letters to Tobiah, and replies from Tobiah kept coming to them. ¹⁸ For many in Judah were under oath to him, since he was son-in-law to Shekaniah son of Arah, and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of Meshullam son of Berekiah.

¹⁰ When Sanballat^(A) the Horonite and Tobiah^(B) the Ammonite official heard about this, they were very much disturbed that someone had come to promote the welfare of the Israelites.^(C)
