¹⁹ So it was, at the gates of Jerusalem, as it ^(A)began to be dark before the Sabbath, that I commanded the gates to be shut, and charged that they must not be opened till after the Sabbath. ^(B)Then I posted some of my servants at the gates, so that no burdens would be brought in on the Sabbath day.

³² It shall be to you a sabbath of solemn rest, and you shall ^[a]afflict your souls; on the ninth day of the month at evening, from evening to evening, you shall ^[b]celebrate your sabbath.”

Hallow the Sabbath Day

¹⁹ Thus the Lord said to me: “Go and stand in the gate of the children of the people, by which the kings of Judah come in and by which they go out, and in all the gates of Jerusalem; ²⁰ and say to them, ^(A)‘Hear the word of the Lord, you kings of Judah, and all Judah, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, who enter by these gates. ²¹ Thus says the Lord: ^(B)“Take heed to yourselves, and bear no burden on the Sabbath day, nor bring it in by the gates of Jerusalem; ²² nor carry a burden out of your houses on the Sabbath day, nor do any work, but hallow the Sabbath day, as I ^(C)commanded your fathers.

^22 (A)‘When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not wholly reap the corners of your field when you reap, nor shall you gather any gleaning from your harvest. You shall leave them for the poor and for the stranger: I am the Lord your God.’ ”

^14 (A)You shall keep the Sabbath, therefore, for it is holy to you. Everyone who ^[a]profanes it shall surely be put to death; for ^(B)whoever does any work on it, that person shall be cut off from among his people. ¹⁵ Work shall be done for ^(C)six days, but the ^(D)seventh is the Sabbath of rest, holy to the Lord. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death. ¹⁶ Therefore the children of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, to observe the Sabbath throughout their generations as a perpetual covenant. ¹⁷ It is ^(E)a sign between Me and the children of Israel forever; for ^(F)in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day He rested and was refreshed.’ ”

³ And I said to them, “Do not let the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun is hot; and while they stand guard, let them shut and bar the doors; and appoint guards from among the inhabitants of Jerusalem, one at his watch station and another in front of his own house.”
