Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection

^21 (A)From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that ^(B)he must go to Jerusalem and ^(C)suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on ^(D)the third day be raised.

Jesus Again Foretells Death, Resurrection

^22 (A)As they were gathering^[a] in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men, ²³ and they will kill him, and he will be raised on ^(B)the third day.” And they were greatly distressed.

¹⁸ “See, ^(A)we are going up to Jerusalem. And the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will ^(B)condemn him to death ¹⁹ and ^(C)deliver him over to the Gentiles ^(D)to be mocked and flogged and ^(E)crucified, and he will be raised on ^(F)the third day.”

⁶⁴ Therefore order the tomb to be made secure until the third day, ^(A)lest his disciples go and steal him away and tell the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last fraud will be worse than the first.”

^21 (A)And he strictly charged and commanded them to tell this to no one, ^22 (B)saying, ^(C)“The Son of Man must ^(D)suffer many things and ^(E)be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on ^(F)the third day be raised.”

Jesus Foretells His Death a Third Time

^31 (A)And taking the twelve, he said to them, “See, ^(B)we are going up to Jerusalem, and ^(C)everything that is written about the Son of Man by the prophets will be accomplished. ³² For he will be ^(D)delivered over to the Gentiles and will be ^(E)mocked and shamefully treated and ^(F)spit upon. ³³ And after flogging him, they will kill him, and on ^(G)the third day he will rise.”

Jesus Appears to His Disciples

³⁶ As they were talking about these things, ^(A)Jesus himself stood among them, and said to them, “Peace to you!” ³⁷ But they were ^(B)startled and ^(C)frightened and ^(D)thought they saw a spirit. ³⁸ And he said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? ³⁹ See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. ^(E)Touch me, and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” ⁴⁰ And when he had said this, ^(F)he showed them his hands and his feet. ⁴¹ And while they still disbelieved ^(G)for joy and were marveling, ^(H)he said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?” ⁴² They gave him a piece of broiled fish,^{[a] 43} and he took it and ate before them.

⁴⁴ Then he said to them, ^(I)“These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, ^(J)that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” ⁴⁵ Then ^(K)he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, ⁴⁶ and said to them, “Thus ^(L)it is written, ^(M)that the Christ should suffer and on the third day ^(N)rise from the dead,

³⁹ And ^(A)we are witnesses of all that he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. ^(B)They put him to death by hanging him on a tree, ⁴⁰ but ^(C)God raised him on ^(D)the third day and made him to ^(E)appear,

⁴ that he was buried, that he was raised ^(A)on the third day ^(B)in accordance with the Scriptures,
